Integrated Animal Care Center - IACC

Integrated Animal Care Center - IACC Auroville Dog Sanctuary is a dog shelter, located on 2 acres of forested land in Auroville in Tamil Nadu, South India.

Integrated Animal Care Centre - IACC is Auroville's existing animal shelter, located on 4 acres of forested land in Auroville, in Tamil Nadu, South India. It has nearly 250 resident dogs of all ages, colours, shapes, sizes and abilities; and each one have their unique special personality and their own name. All our dogs are sterilised, vaccinated and dewormed and they are cared for on a daily basi

s by a dedicated team of amazing workers and volunteers. Most of our dogs run free in one big, happy pack. IACC is a no-kill shelter and we do not euthanise an animal unless it is very sick or suffering from painful disease in old age where we cannot do anything more to ease the suffering. Since its inception in 2005 from grassland landscape with thatched roofs to today's more permanent structures under the shades of lush free growing trees, IACC has come a very long way to looking after countless strays, unwanted and abandoned animals in and around Auroville communities and the bio-region. The Integrated Animal Care Centre has organized (and in many cases, paid for) many sterilizations of both male and female dogs, vaccinated countless animals against rabies in the area of stray and public health, and found homes for many of them in Auroville and the surrounding villages. Some of our dogs are also living their best lives outside India. The aspect of widespread sensitisation and education of the general public has yet to be tackled as this requires a large amount of resources on all levels. We are hoping to generate more resources to approach this task through education in the local schools, organised visits to the shelter, though volunteers who spread awareness when they go from here, and other ways of spreading awareness of animal care and public health. We are also present in certain events to raise awareness about the plight of strays and the need for supporting such projects. A shelter work is a community work and needs support from everyone, as the plight of strays is getting worse and cruelty and neutrality of people is rampant. A large number of our resident dogs are from 'dog dumping' by families or people, abandoned or abused dogs, small puppies stolen/separated from their mothers shortly after birth, street-dog accident victims from the Auroville bio-region. Those who are waiting to be adopted or those who have not been rehomed (sick/aggressive/fearful), will remain at the shelter where they will be cared for and fed for their lifetime. We seek help and also extend help, if possible to other similar organisations in the area to increase the reach. Follow the work of the shelter on our page and learn about our dogs. If you wish to know more about our dogs and projects in the shelter, and would like to participate in it, please write to us.

Our Story

Auroville Dog Sanctuary is a dog shelter, located on 2 acres of forested land in Auroville in Tamil Nadu, South India. We have nearly 130 resident dogs of all ages, colours, shapes and sizes; and each one with their unique special personality. All our dogs are dewormed, sterilised and vaccinated and they are cared for on a daily basis by a dedicated team of amazing workers and volunteers and guided by an experienced veterinarian. Most of our dogs run free in big, happy packs making friends in groups and / or leading confident social lives with a few unsocialised / shy / weak animals. IACC is a no-kill shelter and we do not euthanise an animal unless it is very sick or suffering in old age. We do not discriminate on any grounds of breed, size, color or any handicap. Veterinary care to the IACC animals is provided by our veterinarian, Dr Kavitha. Since its inception in 2005, IACC has looked after countless strays, unwanted, abused and abandoned animals in and around Auroville. Integrated Animal Care has organized (and in many cases, paid for) more than 2000 sterilizations of both male and female dogs, vaccinated countless animals against rabies and other deadly and easily transmittable diseases, took in hundreds of abandoned puppies and found homes for many of them in Auroville and the surrounding areas and also outside India. We are putting in place a knowledge-base to help people be able to adopt dogs from here to a new home in Europe, North America, and elsewhere. When possible, we give temporary space for a limited period of time. It is highly stressful for a home-grown dog to socialise into a pack and / or to be kept isolated. We work together with a network of veterinarians, medical caregivers and people experienced in animal care so that no animal may be left to suffer alone and get help as soon as possible. When it is possible, we participate in fairs and markets to share information about the work of the Shelter and other relevant information to a healthy animal care.

The aspect of widespread sensitisation and education of the general public is yet to be tackled as this requires a large amount of resources on all levels. We are very thankful and grateful to all our benefactors, donators and partners who make it possible to continue caring and working by supporting us in many ways. With their support we have been able to realise important changes in the infrastructure of the Shelter. We have renewed the mesh fencing with higher clearance supported by granite pillars. Three of the huts with keet roofs with bamboo reinforcing were changed after ten years to more permanent sheets to stop leakage of rain water. We could make sturdy and easy to use grid gates to separate isolated sick dogs or small puppies from big dogs or for quarantine purposes. We could make a new enclosure to increase our capacity, to provide space to those animals in the last days of their lives who need rest and a quiet place. We hope in the future to make some enclosures for providing a comfortable space to pets whose parents are on a holiday. We are hoping to generate more resources to approach this task through education in the local schools, organised visits to the shelter and other ways of spreading awareness of animal care and public health. A large number of our resident dogs are from "puppy dumping" outside our gate or in other parts of Auroville or dogs who have been rescued from roads / mistreated and thrown out of homes. We house about 100 resident adult dogs and 30+ puppies who are waiting for someone to be kind to them. Those not adopted will remain at the shelter and they will be cared for and fed for their lifetime. See photos of all our residents and you might want to visit us .
