To celebrate world environment day, under the CSR livelihood and health programme Welspun Foundation,BAIF organised a tree plantation programme at Arnala village of Pardi block in Valsad district. This was organised to spread awareness about manifold benefits of trees in environment conservation, climate sustainability. Tree species of Gulmohar, Jamun, Bakan neem, Sonmahor were planted.
The event saw participants from 4, Self Help Groups consisting of 37 members along with presence of BAIF's staff and Mr. Maheshbhai Dariya from Welspun Foundation.

| Tribal Woman Entrepreneur: Paruben Chaudhari
Where there’s a will there’s a way. Paruben Somubhai Chaudhari, a 46-year old tribal woman from Waroli village in Kaprada block of Valsad district of Gujarat used to work as a daily wage labourer during summer and winter months, struggling to earn a decent income for her family.
After taking up mushroom cultivation as a homestead activity, her income has improved enabling her to earn ₹15000 income from two mushroom cycles and ₹12000 from vegetable production. Paruben successfully uses agricultural waste for mushroom cultivation thereby generating wealth from waste.
She participated in various trainings in skills development which empowered her with additional skills such as basic accounting and negotiation. These trainings organized under Mukta Project, have also improved her communication and managerial skills. Empowered with technical knowledge as well as various other skills, she is able to interact confidently with a varied customer base.
She is a beneficiary under the Project which is being implemented by BAIF Development Research Foundation with the good support of Mukul Madhav Foundation, and sponsored by Shapoorji Pallonji Group. Today, she has happily taken the entrepreneurial route to earn additional income for her family. The project intervention has helped her to transform her life and ensure a secure future for her and her family.

Mushroom Production as a livelihood promotion activity

BAIF Development Research Foundation supported women participants from poor and marginalized families for Mushroom production activity. 150 women farmers from Jirval, Bhandhar Kucth, Varoli villages in Valsad, Gujarat and Randha, Sili, Galondha villages from Silvassa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli participated in the mushroom-based livelihood activity. To encourage these women, Oyster Mushroom production kits for two harvests was distributed to all the women. Nine trainings were conducted to impart knowledge on mushroom production, straw beating, bag hydration, hygiene, harvesting and value addition.
Empowered by the training, the women obtained a yield of around 25 to 30 kg mushrooms in each harvest. This project provided nutritional security as the families were able to consume around 7 to 8 kg of mushrooms. The remaining produce was sold door-to-door in their respective villages and also in the local markets at an average price of Rs. 250 per kg.
Women have demonstrated a positive outlook towards mushroom production as a reliable source of livelihood. This initiative was taken up under Project Mukta with the support of Mukul Madhav Foundation, Finolex Industries and Shapoorji Pallonji Group.

Nahari is an initiative connoting tribal women led traditional indigenous food sales corner set up successfully by BAIF in villages of South Gujarat. The concept of community owned and operated Nahari is an effort to promote tribal cuisine among tourist and urban community of South Gujarat and generate alternate innovative source of livelihood for tribal women.

BAIF Development Research Foundation in 2010, launched a docufiction film - `Mor dekhne jungle mein' (The Peacock Trail) in Hindi to create awareness among the general public about the need to improve the quality of life in rural areas.

The film is directed by Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar, stars Radhika Apte, Sarang Sathaye, Devika Daftadar, Omkar Govardhan, Dr. Shekhar Kulkarni, Madan Deodhar, Ashwini Giri, Sewa Chauhan, Shrikant Yadav, Sagar Deshmukh.

| Parvatiben Patel is a resident of Kaprada block of Gujarat. After the demise of her husband, the only source of income for her family was from selling milk from a cow she had received by virtue of being a member of a self-help group. She was identified as one of the participants of the Godaan project. She received one more cow through the Godaan project along with necessary training, technical inputs, medicine and nutritional support for cattle rearing. Today, Parvatiben is earning up to Rupees 10,000/- per month from the sale of milk yielded by her prized possessions - her two cows. The ‘Godaan’ project implemented by BAIF Institute of Sustainable Livelihoods (BISLD), Gujarat and supported by Atul Foundation, provides training in cattle management practices, nutrition and breeding services with an aim to create assets for tribal women like Parvatiben Patel.
