Supreme Court to Have 38 Judges! What UPSC Aspirants Must Know
The Lok Sabha has passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, increasing the maximum number of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India.
This means the total sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court will increase from 34 to 38 judges, including the CJI.
The government has cited more than 92,000 pending cases, the growing gap between case filings and disposals, and the need to constitute more Constitution Benches as major reasons for the increase.
However, the Bill has also raised concerns because it was passed in the Lok Sabha without a substantive debate.
