AMUCO Opposes PM Modi’s Visit, Says People of Manipur Do Not Welcome Him

With local body elections around the corner, the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) has strongly opposed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Manipur, alleging that the trip is politically motivated and aimed at securing votes. The organisation asserted that the people of Manipur have no reason to extend a welcome to the Prime Minister.

AMUCO recalled that it has been 28 months since communal violence broke out on May 3, 2023, leading to one of the worst crises in the state’s history. Despite repeated appeals from the people of Manipur for the Prime Minister to visit during the height of the unrest, he never came. “Now, without offering any valid explanation, he has suddenly chosen to visit,” the organisation remarked.

Declaring its stand, AMUCO said it will not align with other civil society organisations preparing to welcome the Prime Minister. “The people of Manipur also do not welcome him,” the statement added.

The organisation further highlighted the scale of the ongoing crisis, pointing out that more than 60,000 people remain displaced and over 300 lives have been lost since the violence erupted. “For over two years, the people of Manipur have endured displacement, killings, and immense suffering, yet the Prime Minister has not spoken a single word. How can the people of Manipur forget those days of pain, and on what grounds should they welcome him now?” AMUCO questioned.

CONDOLENCE

The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) strongly condemns the brutal killing of Mr. Nekham Jamhao (59), Chairman of the Thadou Literature Society, Assam, on 2nd September 2025 at around 9 AM. The incident has shocked and saddened us deeply.

Mr. Nekham Jamhao was not only a distinguished scholar but also a great leader who worked selflessly for the cause of peace, harmony, and integrity in Manipur. His contributions towards strengthening unity among different communities will always be remembered with respect. His untimely and tragic death has created an irreparable void in our collective efforts to build a peaceful and united society.

It is highly unfortunate that suspected groups, UKDA and KRA, are believed to be involved in this heinous crime. Such acts of violence are a direct attack on the spirit of brotherhood and the aspirations of the people of Manipur.

AMUCO expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prays for strength during this difficult time. We also call upon the law enforcement agencies to take swift and decisive action to bring the perpetrators to justice so that such incidents do not recur in the future.
