Did you know the paper in your notebook or printer could be greener, literally and environmentally? H**p, one of the world’s most sustainable crops, is emerging as a powerful alternative to tree-based paper. While trees take 20 to 80 years to mature, h**p grows in just 3–4 months, making it a rapidly renewable resource with far less environmental impact.

H**p pulp boasts up to 85% cellulose, compared to just 30–40% in wood, and creates stronger, longer-lasting, and more recyclable paper. It also requires fewer harsh chemicals during processing, and just one acre of h**p can yield as much usable pulp as three to four acres of trees depending on the paper type. It’s more efficient, cleaner, and tougher on waste.

So why isn’t h**p paper everywhere? Outdated regulations, limited infrastructure, and the entrenched wood pulp industry have kept it in the shadows. But as the world shifts toward sustainability, h**p may soon lead a quiet revolution one page at a time.

In Walur Village, Selu Taluka, in the Parbhani District of Maharashtra, India, there is a spiral stepwell that is 1,000 years old and has 8 entrances. This one-of-a-kind "Helical Stepwell" has circular steps going down from 8 sides to the well shaft and 8 Devakoshta (niches) above the steps.

The people of Walur Village recently did a huge cleaning campaign to bring the stepwell back to its former beauty. They got rid of the trash and other things that had piled up over the years, which showed the detailed design and historical importance of this old building. This stepwell, which is thought to be between 1,000 and 1,500 years old, is a great example of the creative architecture and rich cultural history of the area.

A single oak tree is more than just wood and leaves, it’s an entire living system. According to One Earth, a mature oak can support over 2,300 species, making it one of nature’s greatest biodiversity hubs. That includes birds like flycatchers and woodpeckers, hundreds of insects and invertebrates, fungi that share nutrients through the roots, and even mammals like bats that roost in its cavities. The bark, branches, leaves, and roots all play distinct roles in hosting these organisms, often across different life stages.

What’s remarkable is how these species depend not just on the tree’s physical presence, but also on its age. Older oaks provide the deep crevices, decaying wood, and stable habitat necessary for rare lichens, bryophytes, and fungi, according to the Woodland Trust. The tree’s galls, growths formed by insect activity, secrete sugary fluids that attract pollinators, which in turn feed predators, adding further complexity to the ecosystem. Even after an oak dies, it continues to provide shelter, food, and nesting spaces as it slowly decomposes. According to conservation ecologists cited by One Earth, this long-term continuity makes oak woodlands irreplaceable for biodiversity.
