FKJGP files complaint over abusive video targeting Garo Community
Tura, March 07, 2026: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Garo Hills Zone, has lodged a formal complaint at the Tura Police Station against a Facebook user identified as “Salim Islam Meghalaya” for allegedly circulating a video containing abusive and derogatory remarks against the Garo community.
In the complaint submitted on Saturday, Tengsmart Sangma, representing the FKJGP Garo Hills Zone, stated that the video features a non-tribal individual using sexually explicit and offensive language directed at the Garo community. According to the organisation, the video includes highly derogatory terms such as “burbok Garo” and “lawra,” which it described as deeply insulting and unacceptable.
FKJGP stated that such remarks not only hurt the sentiments and dignity of the Garo people but also violate provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 (amended in 2015), which makes it a punishable offence for a non-Scheduled Tribe individual to intentionally insult or humiliate members of a Scheduled Tribe.
The organisation further warned that the circulation of such inflammatory content could aggravate the already sensitive situation between tribal and non-tribal communities in the region. In its complaint, FKJGP has urged the police to take immediate legal action against the individual responsible under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 196 for promoting enmity between groups, Section 103(2) for intentional insult likely to provoke breach of peace, and Section 296 for deliberate acts intended to wound religious or community sentiments.
The organisation has also called for a prompt investigation and necessary action against the person responsible for uploading and circulating the video to prevent further communal tension.
