Tamil Nadu, is one of the oldest and most revered temples dedicated to Shiva. Known for its grand architecture, including the towering Raja Gopuram, this temple is a part of the Pancha Bhoota Stalas, symbolizing Fire (Agni).

The temple is also famous for its connection to Sri Ramana Maharshi, who spent much of his life here, meditating at the foot of the Annamalai Hill.

Devotees perform Girivalam, a 14-km walk around the hill, as an act of devotion. The temple is especially vibrant during the Karthigai Deepam festival, when the hill is lit with a sacred flame.

A place of immense adhyatmik energy, this temple attracts those seeking blessings and self-realization.

Situated 19km east of the terracotta temple town of Bishnupur, the Gokulchand Temple in Gokulnagar is arguably one of the grandest stone built temples of West Bengal. The vast flat flood plains of Bengal offer few places where stone can be quarried, which led to temple architects using the abundant supply of clay to fashion bricks as their primary building material. But stone built temples do exist in the region, and the laterite Gakulchand Temple at Gokulnagar is considered the largest stone temple of the Bankura District of West Bengal.

The complex is defined by a high wall encircling the compound, giving the site the feeling of a fort rather than a temple. The 20m high panchratna temple has a central octagonal pinnacle flanked by smaller square pinnacles at the temple corners. A veranda with triple arched entrance is present on each of the E, S and W elevations.

Ornamentation is minimal, with some low relief carvings depicting avatars of Vishnu, raslila motifs, and other mythological images. These have been subjected to severe weathering.

There is no idol in the sanctum, but instead a photograph of an idol which is worshiped. This is of Lord Krishna, the idol having been removed from the temple and relocated to Bishnupur. It makes a return journey home on special occasions such as Holi.

At the southern extent of the complex lies the Nat Mandir, with a triple arch entrance facing the temple.
Although the mandir roof collapsed long ago, much of the fallen masonry is stored within the structure. A huge jigsaw puzzle waiting to be pieced back together.
An inscribed foundation plaque exists, but weathering has rendered it illegible. It is thought the temple was constructed by the Malla King Raghunath Simha I, in circa 1643 CE.

Up until the early 20th century the temple had endured a lengthy period of neglect. Stone masonry had been robbed for the construction of buildings and roads, although as some restoration occurred in 1923 by Rakhaldas Bondopadhyay. It was only in 1996 that the ASI took over protection of the site and declared it a monument of national importance.

Śiva Śiva to all Śivaganas,
Photographs by :

During my recent trip as part of the “A Yātrā to Ancient Temples” initiative by , I had the pleasure of visiting the Śrī Kapāleśwara temple located in Chennai. I had wanted to visit Kapaali during my last Yātrā, but due to time constraints and other projects, I couldn’t make it. However, this time, I felt that Śiva had called me to the temple.

Upon arrival, I was awestruck by the temple’s grandeur and beauty. The temple corridor was vast, and it housed several other deities’ temples. The temple’s surroundings were equally beautiful with a stunning Puśakarni (pond) located just outside the temple corridor.

According to old texts and stories about the temple, the main temple was once located near the sea. Still, it was later relocated to the city itself. It was fascinating to learn about the temple’s history, and it made me appreciate its existence even more.

Seeing Śiva for the first time was an inexplicable experience that I will cherish forever.

Immediately in front of the main shrine at the Vitthala temple complex in Hampi stands the iconic and much photographed stone chariot. With detachable pairs of stone wheels on the side and housing a small Garuda shrine, it is an exquisitely carved structure.

Originally, there was a brick tower above which was removed at the end of the 19th century (see second image, taken circa 1850). The striding elephants flanking the shrine doorway are not original, but were placed here when the tower was removed. Originally there were horses “pulling” the chariot, the remains of their tails can still be seen in-situ next to the front pair of wheels.

It is thought the chariot was built in the 16th century by the orders of King Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire. The emperor is said to have been impressed by the Sun temple of Konark during the war with Kalinga and wanted to recreate a similar one at Hampi.

This is an image that will be instantly recognisable to almost everyone in India, as it is depicted on the INR 50 currency note.

True freedom comes when we recognize the divine within every atma. The moment we honor the temple of each human body and see God in all, the chains of judgment, ego, and separation fall away. That is when we are truly free. ✨

Discover the World’s Highest Krishna Temple

Hidden deep within the breathtaking Rora Valley of Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, lies a temple that is not only a divine pilgrimage site but also one of the most unique treasures of the Himalayas — Yulla Kanda.

At an astonishing altitude of 3895 meters above sea level, Yulla Kanda is home to the highest Shri Krishna Temple in the world, nestled within the serene waters of a mystical lake. Believed to have been built by the Pandavas during their exile, this sacred site is shrouded in history and spirituality, making it a must-visit for every devout traveler and trekker alike. 🙏✨

The 12 km trek from Yulla Khas Village to the temple takes you through the rugged yet magical mountains of Himachal Pradesh, offering views that will leave you in awe. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, lush greenery, and an air of peace, this trek is a blend of adventure, devotion, and beauty. 🏞️

Janmashtami, the festival of Lord Krishna, holds a special significance here. Pilgrims from across Kinnaur and beyond come to celebrate this sacred occasion at the temple, making it an unmissable experience if you’re around during the festival. 🎉

A fascinating local tradition adds to the mystique of the temple: Floating a traditional Kinnaur cap in the lake by the temple is believed to reveal your destiny. If the cap floats to the other side, it’s a sign of peace and joy in the year ahead. If it sinks, however, it’s a warning that challenges might lie ahead. 🌊🔮

The trek is moderately difficult, best experienced from mid-May to mid-November. Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or simply in search of a spiritual journey, this place promises an unforgettable experience. 🌄

So, if you’re seeking a combination of divine connection, natural beauty, and a dash of adventure, Yulla Kanda should be on your bucket list! 💫

Prambanan Temple is a 9th-century Hindu temple compound in Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, dedicated to the Trimūrti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu) and the Destroyer (Shiva).
The temple compound, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and the second-largest in Southeast Asia after Angkor Wat.
It is characterized by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu architecture, and by the towering 47-metre-high (154 ft) central building inside a large complex of individual temples.
Prambanan temple compounds originally consists of 240 temple structures; which represents the grandeur of ancient Java’s Hindu art and architecture, also considered as a masterpiece of the classical period in Indonesia.
A temple was first built at the site around 850 CE by Rakai Pikatan and expanded extensively by King Lokapala and Balitung Maha Sambu the Sanjaya king of the Mataram Kingdom. A short red-paint script bearing the name “pikatan” was found on one of the finials on top of the Shiva temple, which confirms that King Pikatan was responsible for the initiation of the temple construction.

Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam (வண்டியூர் மாரியம்மன் தெப்பக்குளம்) is a beautiful temple pond located near the Vandiyur Mariamman Temple, about 5 km from the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai. Built in the 17th century by the Nayak ruler Thirumalai Nayak, this grand tank is one of the largest of its kind in South India.

The pond features 12 granite steps on all four sides and houses a small island with the Vigneshwara Temple at its center. The sight is truly breathtaking, especially when the tank is full.

Each year, the Teppoothsavam (Float Festival) takes place in the Tamil month of Thai (January/February), where the idol of Vandiyur Mariamman is taken around the lake in colorful floats, with devotees pulling ropes to guide them through the water—a mesmerizing sight filled with devotion and joy.

This 122-meter-tall statue is the tallest statue in Indonesia and the tallest statue of a Hindu god in the world. It took 28 years to build! The entire structure was built from 754 modules weighing more than 3,000 tons, with a steel frame covered in copper and brass skin. On top of Vishnu’s head sits a 3.5-ton crown covered with gold-plated mosaics.

Nyoman Nuarta is the mastermind and initiator of the Garuda Wisnu Kencana. However, 120 artists were involved in GWK’s construction, costing a total of Rp450 billion. It represents Vishnu, one of the main deities of Hinduism, riding on the back of his faithful bird, Garuda. The Garuda is also the national emblem of Indonesia and represents freedom.
