Let me present to you an interesting event happened yesterday. A 25 year old mother highly educated, along with her father and son (aged 4 years) came to me referred by a neurologist. The child had very severe behaviour problems. When we talked to her, we came to know, the same child was assessed by us 2 years back, when referred by a Pediatrician. We went back and saw the report and found, the child had echolalia and minimal behaviour characteristics needing an early intervention plan. But the parents failed to take any steps to meet the special needs.
Now the child had become severely problematic needing intervention. As the mother is from Trichy, we suggested an early intervention plan. The mother kept on crying and not responding to our suggestion. We finally asked her to come with her husband. But her father told us that her husband had left her, as he could not accept the child. This had hurt the mother and hence she could not respond to our suggestion on early intervention.
Then the most interesting thing happened. The father of the women, told his daughter –
“I am already hurt and old, I am sad because both you and my grandson are suffering. I thought there is no hope. Luckily we came here and I see from the counseling there is lot of opportunities and hope. If you agree to help the child, my stress will be reduced and I may live extra five years to be with you as a support”.
All along we have heard of struggles of parents of children with special needs. We normally miss the agony of grandparents, I thought of sharing this with you.
