Heritage Of Thrissur District @ Risk! Thrissur District of Kerala State is rich in history and cultural tradition of all the administrative divisions of the State with a number of historical sites and monuments as well as notable sites of natural beauty. However the majority the architectural heritage and sites are unprotected – be they in public possession or in private possession. Though they co
nstitute a unique civilization legacy, as valuable as the monuments legally protected by ASI/ SDA and other governmental and non-governmental agencies, this legacy is being steadily eroded as a result of insensitive modernization and urbanization, and the fact that it does not command the same respect as legally protected monuments. The same threat applies to the tangible and intangible heritage forms, with its values of enduring relevance to contemporary Indian society. It is in this context that the launch of a recognized Chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) in the cultural capital of Kerala, Thrissur, is overdue. Aside from sensitizing the public about the need of heritage protection and instilling a sense of social responsibility towards preserving our common heritage as enshrined in Part IVa, 51A of the Constitution of India, the listing of architectural heritage, natural heritage and arts and living traditions will be a first priority. The long term goal will be to develop INTACH Thrissur Chapter into a highly competent, professional and efficient organization of first recourse in all matters concerning Built, Natural, Art and Intangible Heritage of Thrissur District and to put in place an effective system of networking with other like-minded organisations/to built a mutual support system.
