Alpha Palliative Care is a community based non-governmental organization(NGO) dedicated to palliative care since 2005.The goal of palliative care is to ease pain and to help control symptoms and provide comfort, so that patients maintain the easiest possible way of life. Palliative care can help patients who are diagnosed with such conditions as advanced heart disease, cancer, dementia, Parkinson’

s disease, ALS or multiple sclerosis. The Alpha Palliative Care is a not-for-profit organization that works to relieve patients suffering from incurable diseases and afflictions; and improve their quality of life. We provide holistic support to patients dealing with life-threatening illness by providing medical services as well as psychological, social, practical, and spiritual support within the family and home environment. We are committed to developing palliative care and ensuring that it becomes integrated into our healthcare system. With a team of 62 doctors, nurses and other para-medical and non-medical staff; Alpha Palliative Care has been on a strong yet resilient journey to bring pain, healing and comfort to the needy anywhere in the world.

Our Story

Alpha Palliative Care is one of the largest Home Based Palliative Care provider in the country, based in the southern state of Kerala. Alpha operates through 16 Link Centers located in various block panchayaths and 2 Hospices working 24X7 at Edamuttam and Thrissur. Alpha currently provides Palliative Care to over 6700 patients. To-date Alpha has provided services to over 20000 patients. While specially trained doctors, physiotherapists and nurses focus on medical care, hundreds of community volunteers focus on social care.

Medication and all the services such as Doctors Home Care, Nurses Home Care, Day Care and In-patient admission in the hospital is provided FREE of cost.

ALPHA HOSPICES & LINK CENTRES The Vision of Alpha Palliative Care is to expand the present 16 Link Centers and 2 Hospices to every block panchayath,and city in Kerala by Year 2020. These centers, besides providing Palliative Care, are envisaged to include physiotherapy and Vocational Training facilities with Hospices providing In Patient facilities also. The Centers and Hospices will be owned, financed and operated by the local community. Working with Alpha staff, the trained community volunteers based in these Link Centers, will address the emotional, spiritual, social and financial needs faced by the patients and their families and attempt to find a solutions locally. PROJECT PUNARJANI Neuro-rehabilitation Physiotherapy Under this program, Patients with restricted mobility due to accidents, stroke, polio, and people who are mentally challenged etc., are picked up from their places of residence and brought to the physiotherapy centers for undergoing treatment. They are provided food and then after the treatment, dropped back. Some of these patients who require continuous attention are taken in as In Patients for a period of time before they are discharged, subsequent to which they come for treatment on periodical basis. COMPASSIONATE COMMUNITY The Compassionate Community initiative is aimed at creating a network of a patient’s family members, neighbours, colleagues and friends to help in reducing the physical and mental stress of the patient and the immediate family. It is about creating awareness in the society to total care and compassion. STUDENTS ASSOCIATION OF PALLIATIVE CARE This initiative of Alpha Palliative Care is to create awareness in the young and vibrant student community about Palliative care and engage them in these community based projects. Alpha’s “One rupee one Life’’ is a scheme which encourages each child to contribute one rupee from his/her pocket money towards patients’ care. This is also to remind the youth about the needs of the people suffering from pain and distress and do their bit, however small it be, to alleviate their sufferings.

Alpha Wedding This social event is held twice a year for the daughters of economically poor patients of Alpha Family. The functions are conducted as per the traditional customs and rites. Alpha also provides Cash gifts of Rs. 50,000 and 40 grams of gold jewelry. To-date 65 girls have been married off. Cultural programmes are conducted by Alpha Kalavedi (A cultural club of patients children). Santhwana Samanuayam A network of voluntary supporters who donate every month to Alpha. Volunteers run subscription campaigns at their own time. Revenue goes directly to patient care. It is a novel example of community participation. Alpha Homes 12 flats have been provided to patients who have lost their homes due to expensive treatments. Alpha ITI An Industrial Training Institute with State of the Art facilities to empower patients’ children by providing free education. Alpha Care Home A home for elderly orphans where people from various religious faiths live together in complete harmony.
