Earlier today in Barrackpore, the SSNI, in collaboration with the and the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) hosted a technical workshop titled “Towards Healthy Aquatic Ecosystems: Ensuring the Sustainability of Chilika Lake.”

In Observation of World Environment Day and World Oceans Day, the aim was to bring together researchers, policymakers, industry stakeholders, and community leaders to address the pressing challenges of pollution and climate change in aquatic ecosystems.

The workshop addressed critical concerns affecting fisheries, including pollution sources, biodiversity loss and overfishing as well as their impact on livelihoods and food security. Special emphasis was placed on Chilika Lake fisheries, including the mud crab. Discussions also highlighted sustainable solutions, including the program, which advocates for environmentally sustainable fishing practices and associated conservation benefits.

We thank our special guests and experts such as Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Dr. Ranjit Suseelan - India Head, MSC, and many other scientists from CIFRI and CDA. Local fishermen and academic representatives were also among the participants. SSNI’s Dr Sunil Mohamed facilitated the session.

കൊച്ചി: ഇന്ത്യയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള 12 മത്സ്യ ഇനങ്ങൾക്ക് ആഗോള സുസ്ഥിരത സർട്ടിഫിക്കേഷൻ നേടാനുള്ള നടപടികളിലേക്ക് ഈ വർഷം അവസാനത്തോടെ കടക്കും. ആഴക്കടൽ ചെമ്മീൻ, തീരച്ചെമ്മീൻ, കണവ, കൂന്തൽ, കിളിമീൻ, ഞണ്ട് (blue swimming crab), നീരാളി ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള 12 ഇനങ്ങളാണ് മുൻഗണനാ പട്ടികയിൽ.

🐟 EXCITING NEWS FOR INDIA'S SEAFOOD INDUSTRY! 🐟
KOCHI:
India is expected to enter the global fisheries certification by the end of 2025.
A stakeholder workshop held in Kochi on Monday highlighted that the country was making remarkable progress towards sustainable fisheries with most of the prioritised species nearing the completion of fishery improvement projects.
The capacity building workshop was hosted by Sustainable Seafood Network India in association with stakeholders.
The workshop also observed that the demand for certified seafood was surging in the global markets.
Amanda Lejbowicz, Head of Fisheries Standard Accessibility of MSC, London, said that over 15% of the total marine catch across the globe was certified fishery.

Kochi, Aug 28 (IANS) Top marine fishery experts on Wednesday suggested providing incentives to encourage fishermen to adopt sustainable fishing practices and ensuring traceability in the sector.

This was said during a consultative meeting held here to review the progress of the ongoing fishery improvement project aimed at achieving Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for deep sea shrimps, coastal shrimps, and cephalopods from India.

The meeting was attended by Kerala Fisheries Department officials, marine scientists, seafood exporters and representatives from various agencies involved in the fishery improvement project.
