Earlier today in Barrackpore, the SSNI, in collaboration with the and the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) hosted a technical workshop titled “Towards Healthy Aquatic Ecosystems: Ensuring the Sustainability of Chilika Lake.”
In Observation of World Environment Day and World Oceans Day, the aim was to bring together researchers, policymakers, industry stakeholders, and community leaders to address the pressing challenges of pollution and climate change in aquatic ecosystems.
The workshop addressed critical concerns affecting fisheries, including pollution sources, biodiversity loss and overfishing as well as their impact on livelihoods and food security. Special emphasis was placed on Chilika Lake fisheries, including the mud crab. Discussions also highlighted sustainable solutions, including the program, which advocates for environmentally sustainable fishing practices and associated conservation benefits.
We thank our special guests and experts such as Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Dr. Ranjit Suseelan - India Head, MSC, and many other scientists from CIFRI and CDA. Local fishermen and academic representatives were also among the participants. SSNI’s Dr Sunil Mohamed facilitated the session.
