Ancient Bharatiya Meteorology with Bio-Indicators and Planetary Movements | Satya Samvad EP 17

Meteorology, the science of the atmosphere, is where the secrets of the clime are decoded, transforming complex patterns of air, water, and temperature into precise weather predictions that impact our daily lives. In Bharat, we have had indigenous techniques of meteorology that have helped myriad activities, from agriculture and trade to the building of civil society and military infrastructure, since millennia. Acharya Varahamihira's seminal text, the Brihatsamhita illustrates the sophisticated understanding of atmospheric processes that existed in ancient India, while Acharya Chanakya's Arthashastra documents systematic measurements of rainfall and their implications for national revenue and disaster relief efforts. Methodologies for undertaking meteorology included the use of bio-indicators and Panchang (the traditional Hindu calendar), and while we have come to an age of cutting-edge technological interventions for meteorological predictions, it remains fascinating to see the multidisciplinary approach of the Bharatiya people when it came to meteorology, even as the technical and scientific verifiability and reliability of these methods must be studied closely in the modern context.

Charu Maharaj was one of the founders of the Varanasi Sevashrama, though he had not yet joined the Order. At that time he was just Charu Chandra Das, known as Charu Babu. The person who had brought the note said, "Mother is so pleased with the work being done at the Sevashrama that she has sent this money." Mother has also remarked, "I liked the Sevashrama so much that I would like to settle there for good." On hearing this, Swami Brahmananda, Swami Shivananda, Swami Turiyananda, Kedar Baba (Swami Achalananda), Charu Maharaj and all others were beside themselves with joy.

Sister Nivedita certainly qualifies as a "world thinker" as she achieved a great deal of fame as a littérateur, a social workers, a nun, a freedom fighter, and a philosopher in her own right. Her reputation as these is growing, as is her influence on the minds and hearts of many, as the decades pass since her death in 1911.

Reminiscence of Dr. R. G Kar of Sister Nivedita during the plague relief efforts in 1899

"During that time (1899), one day, when I returned home at noon-time after seeing the patients, I saw an European lady sitting on a dusty chair near the door. She was Sister Nivedita. She had been waiting for me for a long time in order to get some information. That morning I had been to see a plague-stricken patient in a slum in Baghbazar. Sister Nivedita had come to enquire about the arrangements made for the patient and to take upon herself the task of nursing him. I told her that the patient's condition was critical. Having discussed with her the possibilities of hygienic nursing in the slums of the poor people, I asked her to take precautions. When I went to visit the patient again in the afternoon I saw Sister Nivedita sitting with the child in her lap in the damp and weather-beaten hut in that unhealthy locality. Day in and day out, night after night, she remained engaged in nursing the child in that hut, having abandoned her own house. When the hut was to be disinfected she took a small ladder and began whitewashing the walls herself. Her nursing never slackened even when death was a certainty. After two days, the child lay in Eternal Sleep in the affectionate lap of that merciful lady."

Sister Nivedita (Bengali pronunciation: [bhagini nibedita] listenⓘ born Margaret Elizabeth Noble; 28 October 1867 – 13 October 1911)[1][2] was an Irish teacher, author, social activist, school founder and disciple of Swami Vivekananda.[3][4] She spent her childhood and early youth in Ireland. She was engaged to marry a Welsh youth, but he died soon after their engagement.

Sister Nivedita met Swami Vivekananda in 1895 in London and travelled to Calcutta (present-day Kolkata), India in 1898. Swami Vivekananda gave her the name Nivedita (meaning "Dedicated to God") when he initiated her into the vow of Brahmacharya on 25 March 1898. In November 1898, she opened a girls' school in the Bagbazar area of North Calcutta. She wanted to educate girls who were deprived of even basic education. During the plague epidemic in Calcutta in 1899, Nivedita nursed and took care of the poor patients.[5]

Nivedita had close associations with the newly established Ramakrishna Mission. Because of her active contribution in the field of Indian Nationalism, she had to publicly dissociate herself from the activities of the Ramakrishna Mission under the then president, Swami Brahmananda. This had to be done in order to avoid their persecution at the hands of British Authorities in India. She was very close to Sarada Devi, the wife of Ramakrishna and one of the major influences behind Ramakrishna Mission, and also with all brother disciples of Swami Vivekananda. She died on 13 October 1911 in Darjeeling. Her epitaph reads, "Here lies Sister Nivedita who gave her all to India".[6]
