From Fear to Understanding: Wildlife Awareness session

On 6th April, Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA) conducted a wildlife awareness session at a construction site in IIT Powai, aimed at building practical knowledge among workers to handle wildlife encounters safely.

The session covered identification of India’s “Big Four” venomous snakes, safe responses during encounters, basic snakebite first aid, and the importance of timely medical care. It also included leopard awareness, focusing on understanding their behavior and how to respond safely in case of sightings, while addressing common myths.

Construction sites can attract snakes due to debris and waste that draw rodents. Leopard awareness is equally important in areas like Powai, as it lies on the fringes of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park - Aarey landscape, a known habitat for leopards that occasionally move through nearby human-dominated spaces.

We thank the workers and site management for their support. Awareness is key to reducing conflict and protecting both people and wildlife.

Illegal Captivity Exposed: Black Kite Rescued and Rehabilitated in Thane

On 25th March, our team at Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA) received an urgent call from Manpada, thane regarding a raptor in distress.

Our rescue team responded swiftly and found that the bird identified as a Black Kite was entangled in electrical wires. The bird was rescue and immediately taken to a vet for further examination.

Upon thorough medical examination, it was found to be severely dehydrated. Adding to its misery, small metal rings were attached to its legs, indicating the bird was captured by humans and attempts were made to tame it.

The bird was freed from the metal rings and housed at the rehab center receiving the appropriate care and making a full recovery.

Incidents like these will not be taken for granted by government officials as well as the NGO and the perpetrator if identified will be punished under the Wildlife Protection Act.

Gliding Into the Unknown: A Rare Snake Stuns Palghar

A great achievement for the Wildlife Welfare Association. A rare snake has just been recognized and recorded for the first time ever in Palghar, Maharashtra, over 130 km crossing beyond its known range from the Western Ghats and the whole of the Northeast region.

The ornate flying snake (Chrysopelea ornata), like other flying snakes, defies logic by being able to glide through the air. It lowers itself off a branch while holding on with its tail and then swings and launches itself forward and off the branch. In India its distribution is in patched form and rarely sighted in the Western Ghats, the whole of the Northeast region, and a few parts of Central India and Gujarat.

Big questions have been raised about the presence of the snake in this region of a natural range expansion Or a human-mediated arrival?(said by Nikhil Parab, co-author of the research paper)

The snake was safely rescued, examined by wildlife biologist Vaishnav Khushal, medically assessed by a veterinarian, and released back into the wild. This single discovery could change what we know about the species’ distribution—and proves how much biodiversity is still waiting to be uncovered.

JAWS OF SURVIVAL 🐊

The successful rescue operation of a juvenile crocodile in Mulund serves as a reminder of the presence of wildlife within city limits. The sighting of the crocodile in a sewage canal sparked fear and concern among residents, highlighting the need for co-existence between humans and wildlife.

Despite the challenges of infested drain water and limited visibility, the rescue team diligently worked to locate and safely retrieve the animal. Measuring at 2.3 feet, the crocodile is now under observation and will undergo necessary procedures before being released into a protected environment.

This incident underscores the importance of implementing measures to promote harmonious cohabitation between urban development and wildlife conservation. The successful rescue is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the rescue team in safeguarding both human and animal safety.

From Distress to Care: Fawn Rescue at Bhandup

On the morning of 4th April, our team at Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA) received a call from a worker at Bhandup Pumping Station reporting the presence of a deer within the premises.

Our WERT team, along with the forest department, reached the spot promptly to assess the situation. Upon arrival, we observed a juvenile spotted deer (chital) sitting in one place, appearing weak and unable to move. On further inquiry, it was understood that the animal had sustained an injury, and was unable to stand.

Considering the conditions, the team carefully planned and executed a safe rescue operation to avoid causing further stress or injury. The deer was gently secured and transported to the Veterinary Hospital at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, where it is currently receiving treatment under the supervision of Dr. Vinaya Jangle.
We remain hopeful for its swift recovery and eventual release back into the wild.

We extend our gratitude to the forest department, the staff at the site, and everyone involved for their timely support and coordination in ensuring the safety and well-being of the animal.

Calm Amid Chaos: Leopard Rescued After Close Encounter

On the morning of 14th March, our team received a panicked call from a local van majur at Malad, reporting a leopard sighting. We promptly reached the location to assist the forest department in managing the situation.

Upon arrival, we found the leopard resting in a pit, visibly exhausted. It was reported that the incident began when a dog accompanying an elderly man charged at the leopard, triggering a brief confrontation during which the man was injured. The leopard, fatigued from the encounter, retreated into the pit. Given its proximity to a nearby hamlet, the animal was safely tranquilized and rescued with utmost care.

The leopard appeared dehydrated and was transported to Sanjay Gandhi National Park for a thorough medical examination. It was identified as an old female. As there were no major injuries, the leopard was later released back into the wild.

We are grateful to all the teams involved in making this rescue a success. Incidents like this highlight the importance of awareness among local communities who share their space with wildlife, helping prevent such situations in the future.

“When awareness replaces fear, coexistence becomes possible”

On account of National Safety Week, our team at Wildlife Welfare Association conducted snake awareness sessions on March 6th at construction sites in coordination with Apco Infratech Pvt Ltd (Bhandup Complex) and Kalpataru Primera (Balkum, Thane), empowering their workforce with knowledge to ensure workplace safety.

The session focused on identifying the “Big Four” venomous snakes of India, safe responses during snake encounters, basic snakebite first aid, and the importance of immediate medical attention. We also addressed common myths and superstitions to replace fear with scientific understanding.

Construction sites often become hotspots for snake encounters as debris and improper waste management attract rodents, which in turn attract snakes looking for food and shelter.

We thank the management and workers of Apco Infratech Pvt Ltd and Kalpataru Primera for their support and participation.

By spreading awareness and encouraging informed responses, we can reduce conflict and protect both human lives and wildlife.

From Rescue to Recovery: A Golden Jackal’s Fight for Survival

On 27th February, our team received a distress call about a Golden Jackal spotted at the NMMC Sewage Treatment Plant in Airoli, reportedly with a leg injury.

Our team promptly reached the location and observed that the jackal had become confined within a drainage line. Working in coordination with the Forest Department, our team carefully carried out the rescue operation and safely secured the animal.

For immediate emergency stabilization, the jackal was rushed to Dr. Karthik’s Pet Clinic. On examination, it was revealed that the animal had sustained multiple injuries across its body and was in critical condition. After receiving primary treatment, the jackal was shifted to our transit centre for further care and monitoring.

At our centre, the jackal is currently under the dedicated care of our rehabilitation team, who are assisting Dr. Shardul Salvi from CPCA with its specialised treatment. Further tests confirmed that the jackal has tested positive for Canine Distemper Disease (CDV), a serious viral disease affecting wild carnivores.

Despite the challenges, our team continues to provide round-the-clock care and treatment. We remain hopeful for its recovery and are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported and continues to support us in stabilizing and caring for this animal.
