Transforming Tradition into Sustainable Conservation! 🌿🧶

From the forest fringes to the loom, the women of Sonitpur are weaving a new story of independence.

For generations, many families in our forest-fringe villages relied on the forest for their daily livelihood—a path often filled with risk and uncertainty. Today, through Project NILIMA, that is changing.

Under the expert guidance of our WAWO Master Trainers, these women are mastering the art of high-quality handloom weaving. By providing them with improved looms, professional training, and market linkages, we have helped create a sustainable, home-based livelihood.

Why this matters:

✅ Reduced Forest Dependency: With a stable income from weaving, the need for daily forest entry has significantly decreased.

✅ Safe & Empowered: Women can now earn with dignity from the safety of their homes while caring for their families.

✅ Conservation in Action: Every item woven under Project NILIMA helps protect the biodiversity of our beautiful Sonitpur forests.
We are so proud of these "Warrior Women" who are proving that economic growth and environmental protection go hand-in-hand.

Stay tuned for the launch of our Summer Collection, where every thread tells a story of forest conservation!

Happy World Earth Day from WAWO - Warrior Women!

Today, we stand united with the global community to honor our home, the Earth, and to celebrate the incredible women who are leading the charge for a sustainable future. At WAWO, every day is Earth Day, but today we take a moment to reflect on our journey and our commitment to climate action in Assam.

This beautiful image captures the heart of our mission. It’s a snapshot of hope, resilience, and true 'Eri-Eco' harmony in action. Here’s what it shows:

🌱 Protecting Biodiversity: We aren't just planting trees; we are nurturing ecosystems. Our women are seen here planting native saplings like Castor and Kesseru. These are not only carbon sinks but the essential food source for the Eri silkworm. We are restoring the unique biodiversity of our forest fringe areas.

🐛 Empowering Livelihoods: This is the 'Eri-Eco' cycle complete. The empty Eri cocoons—harvested only after the moth has naturally emerged ('Ahimsa' or peace silk)—are hand-spun by our skilled artisans. This traditional art provides sustainable income for local women right in their homes.

🎨 Natural, Chemical-Free Dyes: In the background, you see beautiful hanks of Eri silk, dyed using only plant-based extracts sourced from our forests. By rejecting harsh chemical dyes, we protect our water sources and ensure the health of our community and planet.

Our Project NILIMA is built on this foundation: that women’s empowerment and environmental conservation are interconnected. When we empower women with sustainable livelihoods, they become the fiercest guardians of the earth.

This Earth Day, let's learn from these 'Warrior Women' of Sonitpur. Investing in our planet means investing in communities and sustainable practices that respect nature's delicate balance.

How will you honor the Earth today?

🍄 FROM SPORE TO HARVEST: SUCCESS FOR WAWO VANYA PROJECT!

We are thrilled to announce the very first harvest of our scientifically grown Oyster Mushrooms!

Through the WAWO Vanya Project, we have been working diligently to implement modern, sustainable cultivation techniques. Today, those efforts have literally "fruited." These beautiful clusters are a testament to what happens when scientific precision meets community dedication.

Why Oyster Mushrooms?

Nutrient Dense: Packed with protein and essential vitamins.

Sustainable: Grown on agricultural by-products, turning waste into food.

Economic Opportunity: A high-value crop for our local growers.

Stay tuned as we continue to scale this project and bring more sustainable food solutions to our community!

Tat'or Bihu (Bihu of the Loom) is the fourth day of the seven-day Rongali Bihu festival (Sat Bihu), during which Assamese weavers honor their handlooms and are busy weaving new clothes and Gamochas. This day is a major part of the Bihu festival, which starts from Chaitra Sankranti, and celebrates the traditional handloom industry of Assamese culture. On this Bihu day, primarily the daughters-in-law and daughters of the house start weaving new clothes for themselves and their families.

This day represents the work ethic, creativity, and traditional lifestyle of Assamese women.

Traditionally, the loom is considered a seat of the Goddess, and it is also known that Mako (shuttle) and Mohura (bobbin) are worshipped on this day.
