The Urban Development Department, Tawang Division, has issued a public notice prohibiting the use, storage, sale, distribution, and supply of single-use plastic drinking water bottles with a capacity of less than two litres across Tawang District with effect from July 1, 2026.
The order has been issued in the interest of environmental protection, reduction of plastic waste, and promotion of sustainable consumption practices. The ban will apply to all government offices, educational institutions, commercial establishments, event organizers, hotels, restaurants, shops, vendors, and the general public.
Authorities have directed institutions and establishments to adopt alternative arrangements such as water dispensers, refill stations, water filtration systems, or larger-capacity water containers to meet drinking water requirements.
The notice further stated that surprise inspections will be conducted by officials from the District Administration and concerned departments to ensure compliance with the directive.
Violations of the ban will attract action under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, the Arunachal Pradesh Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Bye-laws, 2023, and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. Enforcement measures may include seizure of prohibited items and imposition of penalties as prescribed under the law.
The move is expected to bring a significant change in consumption habits, as many people are accustomed to purchasing 500 ml and 1-litre plastic water bottles due to their convenience. The effectiveness of the ban will depend on public cooperation, the availability of alternatives, and consistent enforcement by the authorities. While implementation may pose challenges initially, the measure is being viewed as a bold step towards reducing plastic waste and promoting a cleaner environment in Tawang.
The notification was issued by the Executive Engineer, Urban Development Department, Tawang Division.
