Farhat Siddique: The Woman Who Paved the Way for Kashmir’s Female Theatre Artists

When we talk about theatre in Kashmir, the name Farhat Siddique stands out. In 1990, when very few women dared to enter the field, Farhat joined Doordarshan as a children’s show host and soon found her way onto the theatre stage.

Her first major play, Tikk Lal,”became a success, while her character Ice Cream made her a familiar face among audiences. She went on to perform with theatre groups across Kashmir and became known for her dedication, earning the nickname “Farhat Festival.”

When opportunities at Doordarshan declined, Farhat refused to give up. In 2014, she founded **Mehak Drama Club**, which now has around 15 members.

But her decades-long journey has also been marked by financial struggles. She says payments owed by Doordarshan have remained pending since 2011. Today, she continues to run the drama club from a rented room and takes up small projects whenever they come.

Despite the hardships, Farhat remains connected to theatre the field she entered when there was little space for women.

Her journey is not just about an artist; it is about a woman who walked onto Kashmir’s stage when few women dared to and helped pave the way for those who followed.
