Though there are no of schools in kashmir for normal children but there is hardly one school for these deaf children. Etablished in 1942, the school for specially-abled children at Solina, Srinagar With only three teachers to teach 150 children, The foundation stone of school was laid by Sir N Gopalaswami Ayanagar. The school was first started for visually disabled children only. In 1972 it was up
graded to Deaf and Dumb Home. The school was earlier named as Abhedananda Home and in 1990 it was changed to Society Human Welfare And Education. Children with different disabilities are enrolled in the Deaf and Dumb and Blind Home wings of the school. The children are taught using Sign Language, Lip Movement and Speech Reading.These children are also trained in crafts such as tailoring, embroidery, short-hand and typing. The society has a home for the blind, where some upto fifty children live and are provided education, boarding and lodging free of cost. They are taught through Braille and are also trained in various crafts. This single school for deaf and dumb is headed by Mtr Arshad SIddiqie who herself teaches these children She says that passouts of this instition have achived a lot.They are bringing laurels to state.
