Beopar Mandal Maharaj Gunj Welcomes Operationalisation of UPHC Maharaj Gunj in Its New Building.
The Historic Trade body of Jammu and Kashmir Beopar Mandal Maharaj Gunj expresses its profound satisfaction and gratitude on the operationalisation of the Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) Maharaj Gunj from its newly constructed building, marking the beginning of a new and hopeful chapter for healthcare in the historic heart of Downtown Srinagar.
The UPHC Maharaj Gunj holds a special place in the history of healthcare in Kashmir. The health centre traces its roots to the period of Maharaja Ranbir Singh, and carries the distinction of being among the oldest healthcare institutions in Srinagar, particularly in the Downtown area. Over the decades, however, this important institution suffered prolonged neglect under successive governments. Following the devastating 2005 earthquake, its old building was declared unsafe, forcing the hospital to function for years from makeshift tin sheds in the Municipal Park at Maharaj Gunj.
For the people of Maharaj Gunj and the surrounding areas, this was not merely an infrastructure issue. It was a matter of dignity, accessibility and the fundamental right to quality healthcare.
Recognising the importance of this institution, Beopar Mandal Maharaj Gunj took up the matter with determination. The Mandal had to move from pillar to post, repeatedly approach the concerned authorities, pursue the matter at different levels and persistently advocate for the construction of a proper healthcare facility. The journey was long and, at times, extremely challenging, but the Mandal remained committed to its promise to the people.
Alhamdulillah, by the grace and mercy of Almighty Allah, that promise has now been fulfilled.
The Beopar Mandal is therefore deeply grateful that the UPHC Maharaj Gunj has finally begun functioning from its new building. We consider this not as a personal achievement of any individual or organisation, but as a collective success made possible through the efforts, cooperation and support of numerous individuals and institutions.
The UPHC Maharaj Gunj also carries a proud medical legacy. Being one of the oldest healthcare institutions in Srinagar and particularly in Downtown, it has had the honour of being associated with some of Kashmir's finest medical professionals, including the highly respected Dr. Ali Mohammad Jan Sahib, whose contribution to the medical history of Kashmir remains deeply remembered and respected.
At this important juncture, the Beopar Mandal Maharaj Gunj places on record its sincere appreciation and heartfelt thanks to every person, officer, department, public representative, engineer, official, worker and well-wisher who contributed in any manner towards making this long-awaited project a reality.
We especially acknowledge those who listened to the concerns of the people, supported the Mandal's efforts and helped overcome the administrative and practical hurdles that stood in the way of completing this project.
A New Beginning, But Not the End
While celebrating the commencement of services from the new building, the Beopar Mandal believes that this should be viewed as the beginning of a new phase, not the conclusion of the journey.
We humbly appeal to the concerned authorities to keep UPHC Maharaj Gunj among their priorities and gradually upgrade the institution to higher levels of healthcare. The facility should be equipped with modern medical infrastructure, diagnostic services, adequate equipment, medicines and other essential facilities so that it can genuinely meet the healthcare needs of the large population it serves.
A historic institution with such a distinguished legacy deserves to be developed into one of the premier public healthcare centres of Srinagar, capable of providing accessible, affordable and dignified healthcare to the people.
The Beopar Mandal also makes a humble appeal to all doctors, paramedical staff, nurses and other personnel serving at the hospital to treat every patient with utmost compassion, care, patience and respect. For a patient and their family, a hospital is often a place of anxiety, vulnerability and hope. A kind word, a caring attitude and a sense of trust can sometimes be as important as medicine itself.
Let this new building become not merely a structure of brick and concrete, but a house of healing, compassion and hope.
