Flood threat is looming over Jammu & Kashmir. There have been so many cloudbursts in the last 10 to 15 days. We have witnessed more than two dozen deaths in Poonch Rajouri alone and property worth crores was destroyed in Beerwah Budgam as well.
Sukhnag and many rivers have been devastated in the last 6 years by the illegal mining mafia. NGT constituted team that visited Beerwah early this year said that 15 lakh tons of riverbed material has been excavated from Sukhnag in Sail and Kangripora villages alone ? Its embankments are loose and flood water is washing its banks. The boulders that were excavated from sukhang used to act as a barrier against gushing flood water.
Funds provided to J&K post 2014 floods have been syphoned off and we see things getting more complicated now. Our urban drainage mechanism is absurd and we see water logging soon after a few hours of rainfall in Srinagar. Same is the situation in other districts of J&K. I request the Comptroller and Auditor General-CAG & Accountant General J&K to hold a special audit / green audit for the funds provided to J&K under flood mitigation post 2014 floods.
