Soroptimist International, in collaboration with ICDS and the Department of Social Welfare (J&K), held a one-day awareness programme focusing on the Elimination Of Violence Against Women.
Violence against women is not only a personal tragedy; it is a profound violation of human rights and a silent emergency within families and communities.
It takes many forms , emotional, psychological, physical, economic and often remains hidden behind social norms that discourage women from seeking help.
Survivors shared experiences marked by loss of confidence, fear, isolation, and victim blaming.
Yet their presence today reflects resilience, dignity, and the will to rebuild lives despite systemic barriers.
No woman should feel alone when she asks for safety.
No survivor should be questioned before being believed.
No community can call itself peaceful while women suffer in silence.

Grateful to the 30 participants who engaged in today’s session with Nisha Ghosh.
Nisha spoke about the many forms of violence women carry in silence emotional hurt, psychological control, physical harm, and the quiet loneliness of not being believed.
Members shared what can be done to prevent harm and support women: listening without judgment, standing beside each other, challenging harmful norms, creating safe spaces, and building systems that protect instead of silence.
Prevention begins with courage, compassion, and collective responsibility.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign highlights the urgent need to address digital violence against women and girls.
Deepfakes, cyberharassment, online stalking, image-based abuse and doxing are now some of the most widespread forms of gender-based violence.
We stand in support of safer digital spaces, stronger accountability systems, and increased awareness of online harm.
Protecting women and girls online is essential for meaningful participation, dignity and security.

Every 2 minutes, a woman dies from cervical cancer, a disease that can be eliminated with the tools we already have.

What to do:
• Get regular screening — early detection reduces risk
• Ensure HPV vaccination for girls
• Seek timely treatment for any identified changes

Elimination is possible when prevention, screening, and treatment reach every woman, everywhere.

"We gathered. We listened. We remembered"

In the heart of Srinagar, among the scent of kehwa and the echo of poetry, we sat with our elders Neerja Mattoo and Naseem Shafaie and listened.
Stories of women, poetry, Kashmiri culture, memory, and language flowed like the Jhelum deep, patient, and full of life.

Thank you to everyone who came, listened, and reminded us that roots don’t just grow in the earth they grow in hearts.
