Here are 5 key fire safety topics everyone should know:
- *Prevention*: Common causes of fires at home like unattended cooking, overloaded outlets, and candles. Keep flammable items 3 feet from heaters and stoves.
- *Smoke Alarms*: Install alarms on every level and inside bedrooms. Test monthly and change batteries yearly. Replace units every 10 years.
- *Escape Plans*: Make a home escape plan with 2 ways out of every room. Pick an outside meeting spot and practice the plan twice a year.
- *Fire Extinguisher Basics*: Remember PASS — Pull the pin, Aim at the base, Squeeze the handle, Sweep side to side. Only use on small fires if you have a clear escape path.
- *Stop, Drop, and Roll*: If clothes catch fire, stop immediately, drop to the ground, cover your face, and roll to smother flames. Teach kids this drill early.
