It has been our great privilege to conduct several recent workshops on the subjects of Marine Conservation and Plastic Pollution Awareness with students from 5th to 12th Standards at schools in Pernem, Sindhudurg and Bardez.

We’ve learned that the youth of the Konkan coastline are proactive, aware and prepared to handle the environmental challenges facing them.

A special thanks to the administrators, teachers, and students of:

I remember the day I first learnt about Satish. I was laying down on a couch on a rooftop, looking out to sea on a Sunday afternoon, and had stumbled across an article written by Rom Whitaker. As I read through, legendary tales about India’s Mr. Sea Turtle had me completely hooked. I was excited, intrigued, and deeply fascinated by this almost Life of Pi-esque story, about a man who marooned himself on wild islands in India, living alongside colonies of nesting sea turtles. I was determined to find him.

Yet, of course, it couldn’t be that easy. A man like Satish, truly humble and old-school, would not have a digital footprint. I would need to use the old fashioned way, and that meant tracking him down by word of mouth. This led me to Kartik Shanker, who had known Satish for many years, and had recently written a book featuring him. Kartik gave me the number of Satish’s daughter, who shared with me a landline number for her parent’s home. I nervously dialled it, and the phone was picked up by a cheerful voice who I would soon come to know and love as Aunty Brenda. She handed over the phone to Satish. I would be glad to say that he was immediately convinced to be featured in a film, but it was quite the contrary. The first response I got was a point blank ‘no’.

But I guess I was really determined. A few days later, I called back, and this time, Satish invited me to their home. As I turned up on a hot summer afternoon, and was lovingly welcomed in, I had no idea that this was just the beginning. I’m not sure why Satish agreed that day, but he did. And once he was in, he was in wholeheartedly.

Over the next six years, both Uncle Satish and Aunty Brenda entertained our film crew's every whim and fancy in filming his story. And we filmmakers can be quite demanding. I think we wrapped up shoot about three times at their home, where Aunty Brenda cooked us a celebratory meal, only to return again!

Many years later, when I asked why he agreed, he responded, “Probably a throwback to the good old days. To get back and see those islands again.” I guess a part of him will always belong there, in those wild islands, with the sea turtles.

Satish uncle was such an inspiration to me and I cherish all the time that I spent with him and his beloved, Aunty Brenda during the shooting of a film that is very close to my heart. I learned so much and am so grateful to everything that he taught me. I will never forget the time we spent and if I get a chance to live even half as incredible a life that he did, I would be honoured. I will forever keep in my heart his spirit of adventure and his unquenchable curiosity and will always try to go the distance to see what’s beyond the horizon, the way he taught us to.

His extensive archives have taught me to keep a better record of our brief time and I’m happy that he’s a part of my archives. These images always make me smile and take me back to the warm afternoons we spent hearing his incredible story with Aunty Brenda always keeping a watchful eye. I hope the two of them have found each other again and are able to enjoy obscure Indonesian pop songs while sipping cups of tea heaped with sugar, just the way uncle liked it. ❤️

Big love to Satish Uncle’s family during these times, but also big love to , , and everyone at and film who have spent years sitting across Satish Bhaskar being equally inspired and amazed at his amazing stories.

I hope one day soon, everyone will get a chance to see the film we’ve been putting together over these years, trying to capture his incredible adventures!

I never met Satish, but I didn't have to meet him to be inspired by him.

During my first year of my Bachelor's, I first heard of Satish and his crazy escapades to these remote islands I had only ever heard of in books. His story inspired me to find work on the islands. When there, it felt much like I was walking through time. Then, I came across sea turtles and I could never turn back.

Coming to Jnana Foundation and starting my work here with the impact campaign of The Turtle Walker feels like life has come full circle ✨

When transcribing footage for the film, I came across a segment where Satish teaches Rohan (young Satish) how to play the harmonica. I have never seen as much joy as I did in Satish's voice and the melody that flowed out of that instrument. This will always be how I picture Satish.

I don't know how better to appreciate and honor a man that changed the way the world looked at Sea Turtles and India than to safeguard the future of these animals for future generations to experience.

Satish Bhaskar, fondly known as India's turtle man, passed away yesterday. Our teams mourn his loss and send our deepest condolences to his family.

The last five years have been some of the best times of our lives. The interactions and time spent with Satish made us feel like a family. From the first interaction with Satish to seeing the spark in his eyes as he saw the brilliant blue of the islands once again, and all the time in between will always stay etched in our memories.

May his light shine bright and keep fueling the world of turtle research and conservation. We hope to do justice to his life and legacy through by and the impact work by stemming from it.
