In post harvest times, elephants often emerge long routes and newer areas in search of crops and get late to returns in Forest patches and stuck in non Forest areas.

Today under Nathua Range, an elephant herd was spotted moving through non-forest areas in broad daylight. Curious crowds quickly gathered, creating a risky situation both for the elephants and local people.

🎯 Nature and Wildlife Association -NWA- Nathua Range QRT Team immediately intervened with Forest Department and sensitized the locals, and systematically cleared the mob to ensure a safe passage for the elephants.

With peaceful coordination and without any disturbance techniques, the herd was gently guided back toward the forest by Forest Staffs.

🌾💚 A timely intervention that protected both human and wild.

Creating safe passages is not just conservation, it's coexistence.

During every crop season, elephant herds move from core forests to buffer zones in search of ripe paddy or maize, often triggering sudden human–elephant conflict (HEC) across North Bengal’s forest fringes. These migration places immense pressure on frontline Forest staff working to protect both wildlife and community livelihoods.

To strengthen field mobility and quick response at HEC hotspots need extra mobility, NWA has deployed four(4) dedicated vehicles for the 2025 paddy season.

These vehicles are supporting Forest staffs of some Ranges under Baikunthapur Forest Division Jalpaiguri Forest Division and Kurseong Forest Division ranging from 15th September to 31st December 2025.

Objective of this support is to reduce responce times of forest teams and reach sensitive zones faster, manage night movements efficiently, and respond to conflict situations with better coordination.

Nature and Wildlife Association - NWA remains committed to assisting the Forest Department and safeguarding both communities and elephants during this crucial period.

“The final stretch of the season!” 🌾🐘

As paddy harvesting nears completion in the next 15–20 days, this is the most crucial time for farmers. Thanks to the joint efforts of Farmers, the Forest Department, Government of West Bengal and NWA QRT teams, crop fields have remained far better protected from elephant raids than in previous years within Nature and Wildlife Association -NWA's operated areas under Jalpaiguri Division, Baikunthapur Forest Division and Kurseong Forest Division.

Now it’s time to safely bring the harvest home — every careful effort in these final days will make the community happy and mark the success of five months of dedication and teamwork. 🌿🤝
