Strengthening HEC Response Across the Indo–Nepal Transboundary Landscape 🐘🐆

Human–Elephant Conflict (HEC) mitigation in the Indo–Nepal transboundary area Under Panighatta Forest Range of Kurseong Forest Division has shown significant improvement over the past few years, with NWA nurturing and strengthening its Primary Response Teams (PRTs) since 2023.

As part of NWA’s field-support policy, essential HEC mitigation tools and field equipment are replenished for PRT members at three-year intervals. Today, NWA initiated the next phase of equipment distribution among PRT members on the Indian side of the Indo–Nepal transboundary landscape—continuing the support initiated in 2023.

PRT areas covered Rakamjot, Kutajot,Hatiramjot, Nayabasti, Mallabari, Handibasti, Tarabari, Jhapujot, Pataram, Baramoniram, Chotamoniram, Nehaljot and surrounding areas.

The initiative aims to ensure that community Volunteers remain adequately equipped for early response, elephant movement monitoring, community awareness and night-time HEC mitigation, while strengthening coordination among the Forest Department, NWA PRTs, JFMCs, Panchayats, SSB and Police Administration.

The distribution programme was held today at Dhimal Community Hall, Mallabari, in the presence of representatives from the Kurseong Forest Division, including ADFO, RO Panighata, RO Tukuriajhar and BO Kolabari, along with SSB Nayabasti, Panchayat representatives and JFMC Presidents.

For NWA, this is more than equipment distribution—it is an investment in prepared communities, stronger field coordination and safer coexistence between people and elephants.

HEC Mitigation Tools Distribution – Phase I | Nirpani, Kurseong Forest Division.

As per Nature and Wildlife Association - NWA's field-support policy, mitigation tools and essential field equipment are replenished for PRT members at three-year intervals. The present distribution is therefore a continuation of the support initiated in 2023, ensuring that our PRT volunteers remain adequately equipped for field-level response and community protection activities.

Today's programme was conducted in the presence of ADFO, Kurseong Forest Division; Range Officer, Panighatta Forest Range; Beat Officer, Kolabari Beat; Police Administration; Panchayat Pradhan; and President- Nirpani JFMC.

HEC mitigation kits comprising NWA T-shirts, NWA-Raincoats, Field kit bags, Searchlights and Walkie-Talkies were distributed to community Volunteers from Kolabari, Rai Tola, Mogor Tola, Tori Bari, Mirjangla and adjoining areas.

This initiative strengthens community preparedness and supports coordinated Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) mitigation alongside the Forest Department, empowering local volunteers to respond more effectively and safely during Elephant movement.

🌿 Appreciation Note – Nature and Wildlife Association - NWA Dhumpara PRT Volunteers

We are proud to appreciate the NWA Dhumpara PRT Volunteers, Nathua Range of Jalpaiguri Forest Division for their continued dedication and exemplary performance in Human–Elephant Conflict (HEC) mitigation over the past year.

It is especially encouraging that the newly formed PRT team of Daina Range of Jalpaiguri Forest Division has sought training and guidance from our Dhumpara PRT members. This is a clear recognition of the experience, maturity, field knowledge and teamwork that the Dhumpara team has developed through their consistent work alongside the Forest Department.

Over the last one year, the Dhumpara PRT has demonstrated that effective HEC mitigation is not only about responding to incidents, but also about discipline, coordination, community engagement, responsible field practices and learning from experience.

The opportunity to train and guide a newly formed PRT team is a proud moment for NWA. It reflects the journey of our volunteers—from learners in the field to role models and mentors for other community-based response teams.

Field Visit & PRT Preparatory Meet – Targhera Range

Nature and Wildlife Association - NWA conducted a field visit and Preparatory PRT Meet at Targhera Range under Baikunthapur Forest Division ahead of the upcoming Paddy season.

The team also interacted with the Tea Garden Manager to understand the challenges and concerns related to elephant movement in and around the tea garden, including safety, movement routes and Human–Elephant Conflict mitigation.

The interaction focused on strengthening coordination between the Forest Department, Tea Garden management, PRT members and local communities for timely information sharing and effective response during the upcoming elephant movement season.

World Elephant Day 2026 | Celebrating Youth for Coexistence 🐘🌿

On 12 August 2026, as the world observes World Elephant Day alongside International Youth Day, the Nature and Wildlife Association (NWA) proudly brings together two powerful forces for conservation—elephants and young people.

To mark this important day, NWA, in collaboration with Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), and in support of the Forest Department, Government of West Bengal, organized a 10 km Road Race from Air View More, Siliguri, to Sukna, Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary West Bengal.

The race was more than a sporting event—it was a Run for Elephants, forests and coexistence. It aimed to create greater awareness about the challenges faced by elephants, the importance of safe movement corridors and the need for responsible community participation in reducing Human-Elephant Conflict.

With 85 runners participating, the event demonstrated the energy and commitment of citizens, particularly young people, towards wildlife conservation. Their participation sends a strong message: the future of Elephant conservation depends not only on forests and wildlife managers, but also on an informed, responsible and engaged generation.

Through such initiatives, NWA seeks to transform awareness into action and encourage youth to become ambassadors for wildlife, champions of coexistence and partners in conservation.

We are truly overwhelmed by the incredible response to the World Elephant Day 10K Road Race. 💚🐘

When we opened registrations, we never imagined that all the available slots would be filled so quickly. Your enthusiasm and support have been far beyond our expectations, especially considering the short notice.

To everyone who registered, shared our event, encouraged friends and family, or simply supported our initiative, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your response has reaffirmed that more and more people are willing to stand up for wildlife, nature, and conservation.

Although registrations were officially closed after reaching our planned capacity, we have decided to increase the number of participation slots. We believe this event is about bringing people together for a meaningful cause, and we don't want to miss the opportunity to welcome more individuals who wish to be a part of this movement.

Nature and Wildlife Association (NWA) was honoured to be invited and felicitated by the Forest Rangers' Association, West Bengal, on the occasion of World Ranger Day.

Representing NWA, our President and Chief Ecologist received this recognition in the presence of distinguished dignitaries, including the Hon'ble MLA of Jalpaiguri, the CCF (North Wildlife), and the DFOs and ADFOs of Gorumara, Kurseong, Jalpaiguri, NTFP, and Social Forestry.

We sincerely thank the Forest Rangers' Association, West Bengal, for this prestigious honour and for recognizing NWA's continued efforts towards wildlife conservation and human–wildlife coexistence.

On this special occasion, we extend our heartfelt respect and gratitude to all Forest Rangers. Their unwavering dedication, courage, and commitment make them the true backbone of forest protection, safeguarding our forests and wildlife for future generations.
