The Centre is also recognized by The Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) of the Government of India, to conduct need-based research in Biodiversity & Plant conservation, with particular emphasis on nurturing and propagating unique plant life of the Western Ghats and Medicinal plants that are of national interest.

General information

Naoroji Godrej Centre for Plant Research (NGCPR) was established in 1992 when Lawkim’s new Shindewadi Works was being built. It is named in fond memory of Late Shri Naoroji Godrej, its objective was to carry out purposeful research in the areas of plant biodiversity & conservation with special reference to medicinal, endemic and endangered plant species to the Western Ghats. The Centre is recognized by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research organization of Government of India, and headed by distinct scientist in the field of plant sciences. In addition, members of research advisory boards from the field of life sciences contributing their efforts for improvement in plant research. NGCPR has a 2.5 hectare Botanical Research Experimental Garden where examples of local endemic, endangered, medicinal and aromatic plants are being propagated and multiplied in the way of ex-situ conservation. A number of commercially viable plants are being analyzed for various properties and to enhance their local exploitation using plant breeding techniques. Vision: We want to be the best in research Organization in the field of Conservation of Endemic, Threatened, Endangered and medical Plant species. Objectives: 1. Cultivation, improvement and mass propagation of medicinal and aromatic plants 2. Conservation and cultivation of endemic & threatened plant species 3. Domestication & improvement of wild edible and ornamental plants 4. Autecological studies of selected timber, energy and plantation tree species 5. Maintenance of bambusetum and orchidarium 6. Development of an Eco (Ideal) village 7. Conservation of sacred groves
