Story:

Translation:

There is a story in Mahabharata. The Pandavas were defeated in a game of dice( a gambling game) and went in exile to a forest along with Draupadi for twelve years. In this dense forest they wandered a lot in search of food. Shri Krishna gave them a pot which was inexhaustible, to help them. This pot could serve good food to any number of people, very quickly. The day that they received this ' Akshayapaatram' is celebrated by people as 'Akshaya tritiyaa'. People believe that fervent prayers to God on this day bring abundant peace and prosperity. It is believed that Lord Parashurama was born on this day. It is also believed that Ganapati ( Gajamukha) started writing the 'Mahabharata' on this day. Therefore this day is auspicious to start any new venture.

Translation:

Once there was a king named Shibi Rana. He was kindhearted and generous. Once Devendra wanted to test him. Therefore he transformed himself and along with the fire-god, Agni, went to see the king. Devendra became an eagle and Agni a pigeon. The pigeon sought the king's help to save his life. The eagle came and begged the king saying, " I am hungry, please don't take my food away from me". To save the pigeon, the king offered to give a part of his own body. The eagle wanted the weight of the king's body parts to be equal to the weight of the pigeon. The king cut off his arm and placed it on the weighing scale but the pigeon was heavier. So the king chopped off his legs, yet the pigeon was heavier. In the end the king sat on the weighing scale himself. Pleased by his actions, Devendra and Agni appeared in their true form and restored the king's body. Having blessed him abundantly, they dispersed.

Translation:

The name Shri Chitrapur Rathotsava or 'Teru' generates joy in the minds of everyone. It is celebrated on the full Moon day of Chaitra month. The Sadhakas arrive from within and outside the country and take part in the celebrations with devotion and faith and obtain Blessings of Lord Bhavanishankar and Pujya Swamiji.

The Chitrapur Rathotsava was started in the year 1862 AD by Parama Pujya Shri Krishnashram Swamiji as an acknowledgement of the ardent desire of his Shishya Parama Pujya Pandurangashram Swamiji. Making of the chariot was started by the sculptors one year earlier itself. Its shape is octagonal. There are seven levels. A thousand small wooden idols have been sculpted on them. With this, the chariot looks beautiful like a blooming lotus. During Rathotsava, the chariot is decorated with flowers and fruits. When Parama Pujya Swamiji along with Lord Bhavanishankar is seated in the chariot, all the Sadhakas pull the chariot with the Jaya-ghosh.

This year the Rathotsava will be celebrated on April 2.
