Meghalaya Progressive Counsellors Union A union of Trained Counsellors with the aim of ensuring that every citizen has access to professiona A single organisation working to:

promote the professional practice of psychological counselling and to encourage the development and advancement of professional psychological counselling as a mental health discipline in Meghalaya. bring together psychological counsellors, psychotherapists and other related practitioners from every corner of the field, including trainees on an equal basis. promote and assist in the research on cou

nselling theories and practice and develop solid positions on a wide range of issues. promote and reinforce high standards in education and training, professional ethics, competency and growth. promote and enhance public awareness of the profession of counselling. campaign for true diversity and equal opportunities in the therapy world and health sector, and support individuals who are discriminated against. campaign against the use of therapy to get people off benefits and/or back to work. change the system whereby starting practitioners have to work unpaid, often with very complex issues and without adequate support. i.) campaign to defend and extend the need of professional qualified counselling in the different setup of society. j.) support and defend practitioners in disciplinary hearings, and also against bullying and harassment. k.) support and defend therapy against attacks from government and media, and against creeping medicalisation. l.) consider and advise on any question of policy related to the practice of counselling referred to it for consideration by any member of the Association or by any other body/agency (government, non-government, public or private sector). m.) advocate for the rights of those that are discriminated and to forge linkages with other movements and organisations for the benefits of all peoples in policy making, law making and other activities related to human rights and dignity. n.) Strive for better working conditions, securing living wages, regularisation of work and employment security and ensuring that counsellors are not mistreated or abused in any manner. o.) Ensure that minimum requirements are met in workplace environment such that the code of ethical practices such as confidentiality, privacy and so on is maintained. p.) Streamline the different profession in the mental health and counselling field such that there can be assurance of the right qualified individual for the right profession/job with the necessary skills and qualification and to challenge the existing norm of hiring and demanding unqualified practitioners in the field of counselling with no skills or qualification in psychological counselling and therapy. q.) take on any social, political, human rights, labour rights, woman empowerment issues or any other that is deemed necessary by the executive committee of the association under the leadership of the Association coordinators. r.) print/publish Newsletters/papers/ magazines /documents/ pamphlets/ posters and other audio-video materials for the purpose of creating awareness in society.
