নিখিল ভারত বঙ্গ সাহিত্য সম্মেলনের প্রথম অধিবেশন হয়েছিল ১৯২৩ সালের ৩-৪ মার্চ বারাণসীতে। উদ্যোক্তা ছিলেন অতুলপ্রসাদ সেন, সুরেন্দ্রনাথ সেন, কেদারনাথ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় প্রমুখ। দ্বিতীয় অধিবেশন হয় ইলাহাবাদে ওই বছরের শেষে, ২৬-২৭ ডিসেম্বর। তার সভাপতি ছিলেন প্রমথনাথ তর্কভূষণ। প্রথম দুটি অধিবেশনের সময় সংস্থার নাম ছিল ‘উত্তর ভারতীয় বঙ্গ সাহিত্য সম্মিলন’। এর পর তৃতীয় থেকে অষ্টবিংশতি অধিবেশন (১৯২৫’৫২) পর্য

ন্ত সংস্থার নাম ছিল ‘প্রবাসী বঙ্গ সাহিত্য সম্মিলন’। ‘প্রবাসী’ শব্দে অনেকের আপত্তি থাকায় জয়পুরে অনুষ্ঠিত ঊনত্রিংশ অধিবেশনে এর নতুন নাম হয় ‘নিখিল ভারত বঙ্গ সাহিত্য সম্মেলন’। এই নামেই সংস্থাটি ভারতের প্রায় প্রতিটি রাজ্যে শাখা স্থাপন ও বার্ষিক অধিবেশন করে আসছে। মূল উদ্দেশ্য বহির্বঙ্গে বাংলা ভাষা ও সাহিত্যের প্রসারে সহায়তা।
