It was in 1978 that an organization called Hynniew Trep Cultural and Welfare Organization was born through a group of elders who saw the danger that the Khasi race might be swallowed and disappear through the invasion of civilization and developments in different spheres of life. The purpose and aim of the organization is to preach and educate its own people to uphold traditions and culture in any
circumstances, so that the race does not vanish from its own land. The organization initiated its work by encouraging the children and youth to love their own folk song by organizing competitions among school children and public every year, during the eighties. The Folk songs brought out the indigenous instruments, which in the process were improved, that now they turn out to be musical instruments producing more beautiful music and rythym than the western instruments which had poisoned the minds and thought of our youth to dispoise their own. It therefore moves the length and breath of Khasi and Jaintia Hills to teach, preach and help the people to retain these dances and at the same time help to polish and improve them to show to the outside world by bringing them to the capital. Besides Cultural programme, the Organization involves itself in welfare programme whenever calamities like Cyclone or major mishaps accurred on its people.
