Among the Sherdukpen people of Shergaon, Arunachal Pradesh, community fishing is more than a way of gathering food. It is a cherished tradition that brings families and neighbours together in shared effort, celebration, and respect for nature. Passed down through generations, it reflects cooperation, indigenous knowledge of rivers and seasons, and a deep bond with the land. During these gatherings, trout fish and tadpoles are commonly caught, and are traditionally cooked with fresh herbs and medicinal green leaves found along the riverside, often alongside other meats for a shared feast. Keeping this tradition alive is important because it preserves cultural identity, strengthens community ties, and teaches younger generations the values of unity, sustainability and heritage.
