Hoopoe

Hoopoe Bringing community-based healthcare to deprived communities internationally. In this way we hope to be of some small help in correcting this data deficit.

Hoopoe is a newly established British charity which aims to bring community-based healthcare projects to deprived communities internationally. We are currently opening a clinic in Hyderabad, the capital of the Indian state of Telangana, within it's largest slum, Rasoolpura. Our Hoopoe India community team will work with both local and international doctors to provide targeted and accessible primar

y healthcare. The Hoopoe India clinic will prioritise those specialties that are most in demand and hardest for the local community to otherwise access. Our initial focus is obstetrics and gynaecology, however paediatrics as well as general community medicine will follow. Local healthcare workers are a key component of Hoopoe India and will extend the reach of our clinic further into the community through home visits and health education initiatives. We are a secular organisation and have a particular interest in epidemiology within deprived communities such as Rasoolpura. In general there is very little public health data available about such communities in developing and newly industrialised countries worldwide. Consequently it is difficult to implement evidence-based interventions; correctly targeting preventative healthcare initiatives for instance requires access to public health information specific to the target community. Throughout Hoopoe's activities, wherever our projects exist, epidemiological data will be actively collected and collated, such that Hoopoe can subsequently publish this data as a free and open resource for others to utilise.
