The Historic 100-Man Kumite of Hanshi Shaswat Kumar
From his childhood, Hanshi Shaswat Kumar believed that karate should be powerful and fearsome, leaving a lasting impact on its practitioners and opponents alike. While training in Shotokan and Kyokushin Karate as a young student, he constantly questioned various aspects of the art. However, he rarely received satisfactory answers from his instructors. Determined to push the limits of his martial arts journey, he later founded Senkoukai Karate with a vision of creating a highly effective and disciplined style. One of his lifelong aspirations was to complete the grueling 100-Man Kumite in full-contact karate. When he decided to undertake this challenge in India, he approached senior karate masters for support. Unfortunately, none of them took his endeavor seriously, and no Indian karate masters were willing to stand by him. Moreover, despite being some of the most well-known karate masters in India, none of them supported Hanshi Shaswat Kumar, nor did they send even a single black belt fighter from their organizations to participate in the Kumite. After persistent efforts, he finally convinced a respected traditional karate master to assist him. However, a major challenge remained: many of the fighters participating in the 100-Man Kumite were not Kyokushin Karate practitioners and were unfamiliar with its fighting style. Hanshi Shaswat Kumar consulted Japanese Grand Master Ryogo Ito regarding this issue. Grand Master Ito approved the challenge, allowing the participants to fight in their own respective styles. With this approval, Hanshi Shaswat Kumar set the date February 9, 2025 for the historic event. Fighters from various karate styles, including Shotokan, Goju-Ryu, and Sh*to-Ryu, came forward to participate. The 100-Man Kumite began at 11 AM and was live-streamed on YouTube, with Grand Master Ryogo Ito watching the event remotely from Japan. The challenge was intense, but Hanshi Shaswat Kumar displayed exceptional endurance, skill, and perseverance. In a remarkable feat, he completed not just 100 but a total of 108 fights, becoming the first Indian karate fighter to successfully accomplish this challenge. On this historic day, February 9, 2025, a new milestone was set in Indian karate history. Grand Master Ryogo Ito officially awarded Hanshi Shaswat Kumar the prestigious 100-Man Kumite certificate. Several respected martial arts figures, including Sensei Banavath Balu, Sensei Ch. Lingamaiah, and Japanese Master Takayuki Asami, witnessed the event live, serving as key eyewitnesses to this legendary achievement. Through this incredible feat, Hanshi Shaswat Kumar has not only cemented his place in martial arts history but has also brought immense pride and recognition to Indian karate on the global stage.
