In July 2025, 'Blossom Theatre' organized a production-oriented workshop on Rod puppetry at Dwaronda Chandimata High School (H.S.) in Dwaronda village, Birbhum, West Bengal. A total of thirty students from Classes VI to X participated in the workshop. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Partha Gupta, Artistic Director of Blossom Theatre, who, at the outset, invited the students to write on two themes:
1. A positive experience of living in harmony with the local ecosystem, and an experience of witnessing environmental damage.
2. Their reasons for liking puppets.
Selected Observations and Reflections by Students
On Nature and Environment:
A student from a Santhal village located near the Choupahari forest described how deliberate forest fires during winter severely damage forest life and contribute to air pollution.
Another student pointed out the wastage of drinking water due to government-installed taps being left open unnecessarily, including those within the school premises.
A third student highlighted the excessive use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in agricultural fields, and how the toxic runoff contaminates nearby ponds and rivers.
On Puppets:
One student wrote:
“Humans create puppets according to their imagination, and they are controlled by humans.”
A girl reflected:
“As a child, when I played with dolls, I would forget that they were just dolls.”
Another student noted:
“A puppet can be much bigger or smaller than a human. I like small puppets.”
One student observed:
“Even if a puppet is hurt, it does not feel anger or sadness, nor does it cry.”
The thirty participants were divided into five groups, each creating short performances based on local environmental themes.
The technical training in Rod puppetry and the responsibility of guiding the production presentations were led by Dr. Pradip Sardar. The overall coordination of the workshop was managed by Manisa Karmakar and Suriya Hembram.
