*நூற்றாண்டு பிறந்தநாள் காணும் அட்டன்பரோ: வாழ்த்த வயதில்லை, வணங்குகிறோம் ஆசானே!*

*சர் டேவிட் அட்டன்பரோ (Sir David Attenborough)!* இந்தப் பெயரை இது வரை நீங்கள் கேள்விப் படாமல் இருந்தால், அவரைப் பற்றித் தெரிந்து கொள்ள இந்நாளை விட சிறப்பான நாள் வேறொன்று அமையாது. உலகமே இன்று டேவிட் அட்டன்பரோ என்னும் அற்புதமான மாமனிதரின் 100வது பிறந்தநாளைக் (08 மே 2026) கொண்டாடிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது.

சரி, அப்படி என்ன அவர் செய்துவிட்டார் என்று கேட்டால்... மனிதகுல வரலாற்றில் நியூட்டன், டார்வின், மேரி கியூரி, ஹம்போல்ட், லின்னேயஸ் உட்பட காலம் கடந்து நிற்கும் மகோன்னதமான ஆளுமைகளின் வரிசையில், சமகாலத்தில் *நம்முடன் வாழும் பொக்கிஷம்* அவர்! நம் போன்ற எண்ணற்ற இயற்கை ஆர்வலர்களுக்கு மானசீக ஆசானும் அவரே! இன்று இயற்கை மற்றும் காட்டுயிர் பாதுகாப்பு, காலநிலைப் பேரழிவு குறித்த ஆபத்துகள் முதலாக ஏற்பட்டிருக்கும் விழிப்புணர்வுகளுக்கும் அதனை ஒட்டிய செயல்பாடுகளுக்கும் அவரது ஆவணப்படங்கள் முதன்மைக் காரணம் ஆகும். *இயற்கை தன் வரலாறு கூற முடிவெடுத்தால்*, சந்தேகத்திற்கு இடமின்றி அது தேர்வு செய்வது டேவிட் *அட்டன்பரோவின் காந்தக் குரலாகவே இருக்கும்*.

இந்த உலகின் மீது வேறு எந்த உயிரினமும் செலுத்தாத ஆதிக்கத்தை மனிதர்கள் ஒருசேர செலுத்தி வருகின்றனர். இது எங்கு சென்று முடியும் என்ற அச்சம் துளியும் இல்லை. *இயற்கையைப் பாதுகாப்பதென்பது* ஏதோ மரங்களையும் பறவைகளையும் காப்பது மட்டுமல்ல; அது *ஒட்டுமொத்த மனிதகுலத்தின் தொடர்ச்சியைத் தீர்மானிக்கும் செயல்பாடு* என்பதை நாம் உணர்ந்து நடக்க வேண்டும். இதை நாம் தவறவிட்டால், நம் சந்ததிகளுக்கான இறுதி காரியத்தை நாமே செய்துவிட்டோம் என்று முடிவு கட்டிவிடலாம். சிலருக்கு, நான் நிலைமையை மிகைப்படுத்தி சொல்வது போலத் தோன்றும். *வீட்டை விட்டு வெளியே வந்து உங்கள் சுற்றுச்சூழலை அவதானியுங்கள்*. என்னுடைய பதைபதைப்பில் உள்ள நியாயம் புரியும்.

கட்டுப்பாடற்ற கேளிக்கைகளில் மூழ்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் தலைமுறைகளை நல்வழிப்படுத்தவும், இன்னும் பிறக்காத தலைமுறைகளின் வாழ்வு செழிக்கவும், அனைவரும் சர் *டேவிட் அட்டன்பரோவைப் பற்றி* மேலும் தேடிப் படித்து, அதனை நம் வீட்டில் உள்ள இளைஞர்களுக்கும், *குழந்தைகளுக்கும் சொல்லித் தர வேண்டும்*. தூய்மையானக் காற்று, தண்ணீர், நிலம்—இதை மக்களுக்கு உறுதி செய்யாத வளர்ச்சி என்பது அடித்தளமற்ற கட்டுமானம் போன்றது. எப்போது சரிந்து உயிர் பறிக்கும் என்றே தெரியாது. ஒரு செங்கல் தானே, ஒன்றும் ஆகாது என்று நினைத்து ஒவ்வொருவரும் பல செங்கல்களை பற்பல ஆண்டுகளாக உருவிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம். அது நம் குழந்தைகள் மீது மொத்தமாக சரியாமல் இருக்க, குறைந்தபட்சம் இன்றிலிருந்தாவது நாமே அதை சீர் செய்ய வேண்டும். இது இயற்கைப் பாதுகாப்பைப் புரிந்து செயல்பட உதவும் சாரம் என்று நம்புகிறேன்.

எனவே, ஆசான் சர் டேவிட் அட்டன்பரோவின் பிறந்தநாளான இன்று அனைவரும் உறுதி ஏற்போமாக! மேலும், *உலக அமைதிக்கான நோபல் பரிசு* அட்டன்பரோவின் கைகளுக்கு வந்து, அப்பரிசு பெருமை கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்பதே என் போன்ற எண்ணற்ற இயற்கைக் காதலர்களின் நெடுங்கால கனவு!

On 30 March 2026, Angeline Mano M was invited as a resource person to organize a wetland bird walk at Poolavari Lake to celebrate World Water Day.

The bird walk was organized by the School of Allied Health Sciences, Environmental Students Club, VMRF-DU, Salem, and led by SOF’s Research Assistant and Nature Educator, Angeline Mano M.

Migratory birds such as the Barn Swallow were observed, and highlights included the Great Cormorant, Black Bittern, along with other common species. We thank the management for their coordination.

On 26 March 2026, Angeline Mano M was invited as a resource person for the bird walk. The Nature Camp was organized by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, Department of Environment, Climate Change & Forests, for 30 students from Panchayat Union Middle School, Moolakkadu.

The bird walk at Stanley Reservoir--Pannavadi, a potential Ramsar site, was led by Angeline Mano M (SOF). Students were introduced to bird watching for the first time, using basic observation techniques to identify birds and their behavior. Highlights of the walk included sightings of the Indian Spot-billed Duck, Painted Stork, Asian Openbill, Grey Heron, and Whiskered Tern.

Students also learned about the feeding behaviour of the Asian Openbill and the importance of wetland habitats in supporting diverse birdlife, making the experience both educational and memorable. The session encouraged keen observation and curiosity among students. It also helped them understand the significance of conserving wetlands as critical habitats for migratory and resident birds. A total of 67 species were recorded during the bird walk.

On 25 March 2026, Angeline Mano M was invited as a resource person for the bird walk. The Nature Camp was organized by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, Department of Environment, Climate Change & Forests, for 30 students from Panchayat Union Middle School, Kannankurichi.

The bird walk at Kannankurichi Lake was led by Angeline Mano M (SOF), where students were introduced to the basics of bird watching using binoculars and a spotting scope. Students observed a variety of wetland birds, including the Black-winged Stilt, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Indian Pond Heron, Little Cormorant, Coppersmith Barbet, Little Grebe, and Indian Spot-billed Duck.

Students also created simple bird checklists during the walk, helping them record their observations. For many students, this was their first experience using binoculars, making the session both exciting and memorable while sparking interest in birdwatching. A total of 46 species were recorded during the bird walk.

On 25 March 2026, Angeline Mano M was invited as a resource person for the bird walk. The Nature Camp was organized by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, Department of Environment, Climate Change & Forests, for 30 students from Panchayat Union Middle School, Kombaipatti.

The session was led by Angeline Mano M (SOF), where students learned about the life cycle of birds through an interactive “Bird Survivor” game. Through play-based learning, students understood the different stages in a bird’s life and the challenges faced at each stage. It was a fun-filled session with lots of bird-themed actions and dance, making the learning lively, engaging, and memorable.

The activity encouraged active participation and boosted students’ confidence to express themselves. It also strengthened their understanding of survival challenges birds face in the wild. Overall, the session created a joyful learning environment while building awareness about bird conservation.

On 24 March 2026, Angeline Mano M was invited as a resource person for the outdoor session. The Nature Camp was organized by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, Department of Environment, Climate Change & Forests, for 30 students from KGBV School, Yercaud.

The session was led by Angeline Mano M (SOF), which focused on the birds of the Shevaroy Hills, including endemic species and their unique adaptations. Students also learned about migratory birds such as the Grey Wagtail, which visits Yercaud every year. Through interactive activities like the “Wild Whisper” game, students engaged in a fun and memorable learning experience, making the session both educational and enjoyable.

The activities encouraged teamwork, listening skills, and quick identification of bird calls. It also helped build curiosity and a deeper appreciation for birdlife among the students.

On 24 March 2026, Angeline Mano M was invited as a resource person for the trekking-cum-nature walk. The Nature Camp was organized by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, Department of Environment, Climate Change & Forests, for 26 students from Panchayat Union Middle School, Muluvi and Pattipadi, Yercaud.

The trek to Sanniyasimalai Peak was led by Angeline Mano M (SOF), during which students explored the trail and engaged in hands-on learning. They observed different types of tree bark, spotted beetles, and listened to bird calls such as the Puff-throated Babbler, White-cheeked Barbet, Common Iora, and Red-whiskered Bulbul.

A highlight was encountering wild orange trees along the trail. Students also had a close sighting of the Chocolate Pansy butterfly, making the experience memorable and engaging. Heartfelt thanks to Veeramani R, Forest Range Officer, Social Forestry Range for the opportunity.

Recently, Angeline Mano M was invited to lead a nature walk for the children of Foothills Open Learning Centre. The nature walk was hosted at Kurumbapatti Zoological Park. The children also had a zoo tour guided by Angeline, explored various types of tree bark through touch and observation, and engaged in a leaf art activity. Many thanks to the Founder, Nikitha Khatri, and the facilitators for the support.

On 20 & 21 February 2026, Angeline Mano and Ganeshwar SV from the Salem Ornithological Foundation participated in the Garuda Bird Atlas held in Tirupati.
Over two days, assigned survey grids were systematically covered, documenting bird species through careful observation and checklist submission.

A heartfelt thanks to Pushya Mitra S and Hareesha A S for inviting us to be the expert leads and for coordinating such a meaningful initiative.
Being part of such large-scale atlas efforts highlights the power of citizen science and collaborative conservation.
