Can reading be both fun and a way to strengthen foundational skills? 🤔

Every day, we enter the classroom with a story to share, breaking hesitation around reading and gradually nurturing a love for it.🌼

Children choose quality literature, engage in self-reading hours, and take ownership of managing their own library. And when we see them gather around their reading corners during free time, we know the library is doing its work, building a culture of reading in government primary schools.📖📚

By giving children access to books beyond the school bag, we are creating pathways to improve reading skills in ways that are joyful and meaningful.

We believe that meaningful learning begins when we meet children where they are. 🌼

As the harvest season begins in April, there is a direct effect on students' learning in government primary schools in Sonbhadra. During this time, many children accompany their families to the fields or stay at home caring for their younger siblings or spend their days collecting mahua.

Classrooms grow quieter, with attendance dropping to nearly 25%. For us, it is a reminder: education cannot be designed in isolation from children’s lived realities.

Our approach in April is rooted in this understanding. We consciously adapt, keeping academics light and creating spaces for joyful learning. Through play-based activities, storytelling, and shared responsibilities like organising libraries, we ensure that children who do come to school continue to feel engaged, seen, and connected.

At the same time, our team visits communities, engages with families and gently encourages children to return to school.

Designing education in tribal rural regions like Sonbhadra demands listening, observing, and evolving with the rhythms of the community.

We constantly learn, reflect, and reimagine our classroom practices.✨

Our team member, Tulika, attended the Comics Corner workshop hosted by Kutumb Foundation. The workshop included enriching sessions on read-alouds and drama activities around comics, while exploring curious and creative ways of storytelling.

From bringing living and non-living objects to life through enactment to discovering fresh ways of engaging with stories, we returned with new ideas and a deeper understanding of comics as a medium.

The next step is to bring these learnings into our children’s libraries and classrooms, making reading more joyful, imaginative, and interactive. 🌼

Gratitude to for supporting grassroots organisations that are building a strong foundation of language and literacy in government schools through libraries. 🌻

A meaningful milestone in our journey of nurturing youth leadership in Sonbhadra. ✨

Through the closing ceremony of the SOCCs initiative, we celebrated the journey of our first cohort of young leaders from Padracch, the second-largest gram panchayat in the district. 🌻

The youth reflected on how the program strengthened their communication skills, built confidence, and deepened their connection with spaces like schools, libraries, and learning centres. A particularly powerful highlight was hearing from parents, who spoke about the visible growth in their children.

The day concluded with a shared vision for continued engagement with youth and the community.🌼

A defining milestone for us. ✨

We are thrilled and proud to share with you that we have signed an MOU with the District Department of Education, Sonbhadra. 🌻

This is the first-ever MOU signed by the department with any organization and that too with a grassroots organization.

This agreement reflects the department’s trust in our work and enables us to work across government schools at the district level, further advancing our mission of strengthening foundational language and literacy, while promoting a culture of reading by establishing vibrant children’s libraries.

We are grateful to all our partners and supporters for believing in our work. We extend our sincere thanks to the District Education Department for their continued trust.

Together, we strive to build an equitable education system for children in Sonbhadra.🕊

According to the United Nations World Water Development Report 2025, over half of the world’s population faces severe water scarcity. However, this crisis is not experienced equally.

In remote areas like Padracch in Sonbhadra, studies have found high levels of fluoride in groundwater, impacting the health and well-being of communities.

In response, our young changemakers from Tarunya are coming together to build a rainwater harvesting and filtration system using locally available resources.

Their collective effort shows that when communities stay aware and engaged with the challenges around them, meaningful solutions can emerge right from the grassroots.

Happy World Poetry Day! 🕊🌻

Poetry connects. Poetry teaches, and Poetry entertains.

In the remote tribal region of Sonbhadra, where access to rich learning experiences is often limited, poems become so much more than words on a page. They bring rhythm, movement, and moments of joy into classrooms.

Through poetry, children begin to think, speak, and express themselves with growing confidence.

We carefully curate poems in our curriculum to nurture not just foundational language skills, but also expression and agency, so every child, no matter where they come from, can find their voice.

We celebrate the quiet, powerful ways in which stories shape who we become.

Storytelling is more than just a activity. It is a voice for children to express, to imagine, and to question.

We adopt a storytelling-based pedagogy not only to strengthen the foundational language and literacy of students, but also to nurture their expression and agency.

Through action-based storytelling, children relate to characters, share their own narratives, and learn to listen deeply to others. In the process, they grow into confident speakers and empathetic listeners.

Because sometimes, the most powerful change begins with a child who learns to tell their story and believes it matters.

Nurturing grassroots changemakers, one skill at a time!🌻

Under Tarunya, our Youth Leadership Program, youth recently participated in their second residential capacity-building workshop, where they learnt about developing practical solutions to local challenges.

During the workshop, youth gained hands-on experience in building rainwater harvesting and water filtration systems. In Padracch, the second-largest gram panchayat in Sonbhadra region, high fluoride levels in water continue to affect the health and well-being of communities.

By equipping young leaders with practical skills, the workshop helped them understand the issue and take informed action within their villages.

We are grateful to our trainers, Shri Jai Narayan Tiwari ji, our key local supporter, and Dr. Rashmi Singh ji from Kisan Vikas Kendra, Sonbhadra, for leading training sessions and supporting youth in their journey of emerging as leaders and community changemakers.

On India Giving Day, we are reminded that the progress of our nation is built on the choices each one of us makes. 🌻

Each one of us builds India.
Each child deserves access to quality education.
And each one of us must ensure that no child is left behind.

In the aspirational district of Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, where nearly 50% of students in Classes 3 and 5 are unable to read a Grade 2-level text, we partner with government primary schools to strengthen foundational language and literacy among children from marginalised communities, and help build a conducive learning environment in government schools.📚🌼

Support a child’s learning journey for a year.
Because when a child learns, India moves forward.

On International Women’s Day, we invited women from the community we work with, not just to mark the day, but to create space for dialogue and shared experiences. ✨

The gathering began with mothers of children from our partner schools, and gradually the circle grew as more women joined in. 🌻

Women engaged with some reflective activities. In 'Sapno Ke Deewar', women wrote and drew their dreams. In 'Meri Kahani Meri Takat', they shared memorable experiences from their lives. These simple yet thoughtful activities opened up conversations and encouraged women to reflect on their aspirations and the many roles they hold in their lives.🕊

For us, dialogue is not limited to a single day, nor is it confined only to children. Alongside students, we actively engage with parents because together we build a more supportive learning environment for children and nurture thoughtful conversations in rural communities.

Education is one of the most powerful tools to ensure rights, justice, and action for all women and girls. 💫

Women throughout history have fought long to claim the dignity, rights, and justice they deserve. Yet, the journey toward equality is far from over. In many communities, women are still the last mile to be reached.

We are grateful to play a small part in this journey, providing quality education and engaging with women and young girls in one of the most remote corners of our country, Sonbhadra, the tribal heartland of India.

Because when girls learn, communities transform.

This Women’s Day, we celebrate the strength, courage, and dreams of every woman and girl. 🌻✨
