At Upkram, we work along the same lines creating joyful learning experiences for children in the remote rural villages of Sonbhadra, where storytelling, and imagination help make school a place children want to be. :)

How can children connect more deeply with literature and discover the joy of reading?

These are questions we keep returning to as we strengthen our school library programme, Padhne Ki Ghanti.

Padhne ki Ghanti (PKG) gives children the opportunity to explore books beyond their textbooks and discover reading at their own pace. This has helped increase their reading time and strengthen their foundational literacy skills.

To continue creating better learning experiences for children, we, too, must keep learning. As part of this journey, our team member Nutan participated in a week-long residential Children’s Library Course organised by Parag, Tata Trusts, in Lucknow.

The workshop brought together a community of practitioners and offered a deeper understanding of libraries, children’s literature, read-alouds and storytelling.

We look forward to bringing these new learnings into our work. Our gratitude to Parag for creating such a meaningful space for learning and exchange.

We believe that shared learning experiences make the journey meaningful. 🌻

Every week, we come together for Manthan, our internal team meeting at Upkram, where everyone gathers, from the programme team to those working at the desk.

The meeting is not just about sharing updates. It is a space to pause and reflect:

What did I learn this week?
What challenged me?
How can I carry these learnings into the week ahead?

It also gives us a chance to understand what others on the team are experiencing.

Starting off with the five minutes of meditation in the beginning, Manthan is truly a collective space to reflect and keep becoming better, both personally and professionally.

These are more than stories of young people teaching in classrooms; they are stories of young people discovering what they can do.

We all remember that one teacher from our school days whom we looked up to not just as a teacher, but as an educator and a mentor. 🌻

They are the teachers we still think of, reach out to, and wish on Teacher's Day, even years after leaving their classroom.

Because some teachers go beyond their subject or what is expected of them.

This Teacher's Day, we are sharing with you the story of one such teacher from our partner government primary school, who continues to learn and collaborate to make learning better for children.

When young people step into classrooms, they create new possibilities for children. ✨

We are delighted to introduce our newly joined youth EduLeaders, who are now learning, teaching, and growing alongside children in our partner government primary schools across Sonbhadra.

In a region where young people often have limited access to opportunities for exposure and professional growth, we believe in creating spaces where they can build skills, gain meaningful experience, and contribute to their communities.

Through their EduLeadership journey, these young people are becoming role models for children, bringing new energy, perspectives, and possibilities into the classroom.

Going beyond proposals and numbers, the team from Nucleus Software Foundation (NSF) visited us in Sonbhadra to understand the people and context that shape our work.

Before beginning their support for Abhivyakti, our school learning programme, Madhu ji, Neeta ji, and team from NSF interacted with children and community members, observed a learning session facilitated by our team, and spent time understanding our work firsthand.

These interactions helped build a deeper understanding of what we do, how we do it, and why we do it.

Today, with NSF's support, 10 young people from the local community are emerging as Youth Edu-Leaders, creating change in their village schools while becoming role models for the children they work with.

Gratitude to the Nucleus Software Foundation for believing in our work. We look forward to many more such visits and shared learnings.

The time of the day, when children eagerly wait to choose what they want to read.

When every week the Padhne Ki Ghanti rings, their independent reading hour starts at school.

And on most such days, we see something interesting: attendance shoots up.

But why? What makes a library period so special?

Through Padhne Ki Ghanti, children not only get access to a variety of literature from stories and poems to books across themes and genres. They participate in read-alouds, storytelling, kitabon ki antakshari, and more activities turning the library into a space that is lively, and full of children’s voices.

Our approach to the library goes beyond simply improving reading skills. It is about helping children discover the joy of reading, express themselves freely, make choices, and take ownership of their learning space.

What are you reading these days? 🌻

A book can take us places we may never visit, introduce us to lives we may never live, and open our minds to ideas we would otherwise never encounter.

That is the joy of reading.🌈

Sometimes, a book is simply a way to spend a quiet afternoon and follow a curious thought.

For our youth eduleaders, though, reading is also part of preparing for the classroom. Before they bring a story to children, they read it themselves, exploring its nuances and thinking through how to bring it to life through storytelling.

So, in many ways, every day is a reading day for our team.

As we continue celebrating Library Week, following National Librarian's Day on 12 August, we are sharing a glimpse into what our team is reading right now. 🤍
