Though we often ignore crows’ presence, they are among the smartest birds in our ecosystem, known for remarkable abilities such as tool use, problem-solving, strong memory, and complex social behavior.

On 14th February 2026, we celebrated the Great Backyard Bird Count here in Kinnaur not just as an event, but as a continuation of our larger journey of nature conservation and awareness.

For four days, people around the world step outside to observe and document birds. Here in Kinnaur, we joined this global movement while staying rooted in our own landscape walking through habitats, listening to stories, documenting species, and understanding the deep connection between birds and our mountains and how local knowledge adds meaning to every sighting.

This is more than counting birds. It is about building awareness, reviving stories, and nurturing a culture of conservation.

Follow us for more meaningful and exciting nature-based activities ahead. 🌿

Kinnaur, a land of deep valleys and high mountains, is home to one of the most elusive creatures on Earth the snow leopard. Usually found between 3,000 and 5,000 meters, these cats stay far from human eyes. But this week, something rare happened. A snow leopard was found trapped in the filter inlet channel of the Kafnu Dam (Sanjay Hydro Electric Project) in Bhaba Valley at around 2,400* meters, one of the lowest elevations ever recorded in Kinnaur. The animal was rescued.

This sighting is special not just for its low altitude but for what it makes us ask. Why was the snow leopard here, so early in the season and so close to people? They usually come down in deep winter, often when food is scarce or when they are old or injured. But this one looked healthy and calm.

For Kinnaur, this is more than a sighting. It reminds us that we share our home with the wild, and it asks us to understand and protect it better. Every such moment shows how closely our lives are tied to this landscape and its living world.

From film screenings with school students to field visits where we found signs of a snow leopard s**t, paw marks, and traces of its movement every step brings us closer to understanding our landscape.

We’ve now begun camera trapping and sharing the data collected from these wild spaces, continuing to learn and grow together with the community.

Because we believe the future of conservation lies in every small steps we take today🐾❄️
