A day of OUT REACH by THENDRAL MOVEMENT:

Today's fieldwork provided the Interns & Volunteers with valuable practical exposure to community outreach, social awareness, and casework practice. They actively participated in the distribution of solar lights, slippers, clothes, and biscuits to the vulnerable Irula community along with the Thendral Movement staff, inmates, volunteers, co-interns, and a local social service-minded individual. The distribution was carried out at three locations:
1.Kaalikovil Paalatrangarai (under Arcot Bridge), 2.Anaicut Keezhdevadhanam, and 3.Sathampakkam.

This experience helped them understand the importance of coordinated teamwork, community participation, and ensuring that essential resources reach marginalized population.

At Sathampakkam, they also participated in creating awareness about bonded labour, as many residents are engaged in brick-making work. This activity enhanced their understanding of labour exploitation, the need for community awareness, and the role of social workers in promoting human rights and social justice.

The living conditions of the (Irulas) ST Community people with their children in the outskirts of Villages without any basic facilities for women and children and elders like own piece of land, House, electricity, Water connections etc., It is heartening to know the fact that their plight for years together haven't changed despite many petitions to the State Governments previous & present for a piece of land. Thendral enshouldered the responsibility, hence, we resolved to take this challenging task to involve in approaching the District Revenue administration.

After the programme, Interns had an insightful discussion with the founder of the NGO regarding various issues faced by women in society. They also learned about their personal journey, challenges, and motivation for establishing the organization. This interaction inspired them and deepened their understanding of leadership, commitment, and the impact of social work in empowering vulnerable communities.

Later, they initiated a casework session with one of the inmates. They focused on establishing rapport, creating a safe and comfortable environment, and encouraging open communication. This experience strengthened their casework skills, especially in building trust, active listening, empathy, and professional communication.

Overall, today's field experience enhanced their knowledge of community organization, awareness generation, casework practice, and professional ethics. It improved their confidence in interacting with diverse population and reinforced their commitment to serving vulnerable communities through social work.
