Some of the greatest sons of India had their homes in Sonarpur. We can name Dwarkanath Bidyabhusan, Ramnarayan Tarkaratna, Acharya Sibnath Sashtri – the noted pioneers in the great Renaissance of Bengal. We can also name Subhaschandra Bose, Manabendranath Roy, the eminent statesmen and visionaries; Salil Chowdhury, one of the most talented musicians India has ever produced and many others. .All th
ose greats had tenable attachment to the soil and sanctity of Sonarpur. Sonarpur had been one of the most vibrant arenas where series of social, political and cultural movements yielding significant changes during pre & post independent era went on for more than a century. The great tradition of the land induced and led us to the foundation of the society we stand and act for. In 1988, with a few key agreements and understandings among some fifty Sports Clubs and other Socio-cultural organizations, we formed the society under the name: ‘Sonarpur Thana Club Samannay Sammilani’ presenting itself as the coordinating body, and designed to set out for larger cultural and welfare ventures in Sonarpur. During lst twentyone years’ journey we could stage some big events like ‘Sonarpur Bookfair’ ‘Theatre Festivals’ ‘Camps for Physically Challenged Persons’ etc.; set up some major welfare services like ‘Ambulance Services’ ‘Medical Services’ ‘Vocational Institute’ ‘Projects for Physically Challenged Persons’ etc.; initiate and run ‘Anubhab’ (newspaper); publish series of books under Anubhab Publication. In the process, Sonarpur Samanny could initiate and harbour a movement that gained momentum causing gradual changes and desired uprisings in our way of living.
