“My Ghat, My Responsibility” Initiative

A landmark step towards protecting and preserving the sacred Godavari riverfront was taken with the official launch of the “My Ghat, My Responsibility” brochure by the Hon’ble MLA, District Collector, and Municipal Commissioner as part of World Environment Day celebrations.

The initiative introduces an innovative “One Ghat – One NGO – One Corporate” model, bringing together government departments, NGOs, corporate organizations through CSR, educational institutions, volunteers, and citizens under a common mission of maintaining clean, plastic-free, and environmentally sustainable ghats.
“My Godavari, My Pride – My Ghat, My Responsibility” is not just a campaign; it is a people’s movement that encourages every citizen to become a guardian of the river by preventing littering, reducing single-use plastics, and actively participating in environmental conservation efforts.

Under the statewide SASA Programme conducted on every 3rd Saturday, this month’s special theme was “Plastic-Free State”, focusing on sustainable alternatives, eco-friendly entrepreneurship, source segregation, circular economy practices, and reduction of single-use plastics.

As part of this initiative, Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation successfully organized and facilitated 4 dedicated Green Entrepreneur Stalls at the programme venue to encourage and promote local eco-friendly entrepreneurs working towards sustainable products and environmental solutions.

The stalls served as a live demonstration platform showcasing:

* Cloth bags and reusable alternatives
* Eco-friendly household products
* Waste-to-wealth innovations
* Sustainable packaging materials
* Upcycled and recycled products
* Awareness materials on plastic reduction and responsible consumption

The primary objective of these stalls was not only product exhibition but also to provide a public promotion and market linkage platform for emerging green entrepreneurs. The initiative helped create direct interaction between citizens, entrepreneurs, self-help groups, NGOs, and municipal authorities, encouraging community participation in the green economy.

A major highlight of the programme was the official launch of the Green Entrepreneurs Registration QR Code Initiative by the Municipal Corporation. Through this QR-based registration system, interested green entrepreneurs, startups, SHGs, recyclers, environmental innovators, and eco-business groups can directly connect with the Municipal Corporation.

Plastic-Free Awareness Demonstration – Truth Behind “Biodegradable” Covers

In many markets and shops, covers are being sold with labels like “Bio Cover”, “Biodegradable Cover”, “Eco-Friendly Cover”, or “Compostable Cover”. But in reality, many of these are duplicate or fake biodegradable covers mixed with plastic materials. They do not dissolve naturally and continue to harm rivers, soil, animals, and human health for many years.

To create awareness among citizens, students, NGOs, shopkeepers, and vendors, a live experiment can be conducted showing the difference between:

• Genuine biodegradable/corn starch covers
• Non-woven bags
• Regular plastic covers
• Duplicate biodegradable covers

Experiment Concept:

Place different types of covers into separate chemical or water-based testing containers and observe their behavior over time.

The demonstration should clearly show:

* Genuine biodegradable or corn starch covers start softening and breaking down naturally under suitable conditions.
* Plastic covers remain unchanged even after long exposure.
* Duplicate “bio” covers behave exactly like plastic and do not dissolve.
* Non-woven bags, though reusable, are also made from polypropylene plastic and take years to decompose.

Key Awareness Message:

“Just because a cover says BIO does not mean it is environmentally safe.”

Conducted an interactive citizen engagement programme on Solid Waste Management (SWM) at a public park in Rajahmundry along with the MHO Madam and sanitation staff to create awareness on cleanliness, source segregation, and responsible waste disposal practices. The interaction focused on educating morning walkers, families, youth, and regular park visitors about the importance of maintaining clean public spaces and adopting sustainable waste management habits in daily life.

During the programme, citizens were sensitized about wet and dry waste segregation, reduction of single-use plastics, proper usage of dustbins, home composting practices, and the role of public participation in achieving a cleaner and healthier city. The sanitation staff actively demonstrated correct waste disposal methods and explained the city’s ongoing sanitation efforts under Swachh Survekshan initiatives.

The activity also served as a platform for direct public interaction, where citizens shared feedback, concerns, and suggestions regarding sanitation services, waste collection, and park maintenance. The presence of the MHO Madam encouraged positive community participation and strengthened public confidence in municipal sanitation initiatives.

Through this awareness drive, the programme aimed to build civic responsibility, encourage behavioural change among citizens, and promote collective ownership towards keeping parks and public areas clean, green, and sustainable for future generations.
