A group of young, energetic women of Raiganj and its adjacent villages under the leadership of Jaba Bhattacherjee, the Secretary of the organization were moved to see the deplorable condition of illiterate and ignorant women and poor children of the neighboring villages. They felt an urge to do something positive to better the living condition of the poor women and children in the near-by villages
. They met the poor women repeatedly and identified their main problems. After series of meetings and group discussions they made a common platform and took a solemn vow to work unitedly to enlighten and empower the poor women in the rural area. Their genuine urge to better the living condition of the poor women and children was actualized into action with the establishment of Shripur Mohila-O-Khadi Unnayan Samity (SMOKUS) in 1990. The Organization was later on registered as a non-political, non-communal and non-profit making NGO in 1994.
