Nanhe Kadam Crèche Nurturing children of incarcerated mothers with love, care & learning — while empowering mothers to heal through support.

Learning math through play 🎲✨

At Nanhe Kadam, our teachers turn everyday objects into powerful learning tools. Using domino cards, pebbles, toys, fruits and vegetables, the little ones explore numbers, counting, and matching in a fun, hands-on way!

They learn to recite numbers, understand number values from 1 to 10 (matching 4 items to the number 4 on the card), and connect visual quantities to number cards with confidence.

When math becomes play, curiosity grows and foundations become stronger 🌱

What changes are we making in the lives of the children?

For children growing up inside prison walls with their incarcerated mothers, childhood can become overshadowed by uncertainty, isolation, and trauma. At Nanhe Kadam, we strive to change that story.

When the boy first walked into our crèche, everything was new. The colourful classroom, the toys, the learning materials each discovery sparked wonder and excitement.
A toy car became his first adventure.
A ball became a source of laughter.
New friends became companions.

In four days, something remarkable happened.

The child who had entered cautiously began looking forward to every morning at the crèche.
His mother shared that he now wakes up eager to get ready by 8:00 a.m., excited that he gets to come back.

These may seem like small moments, but they are powerful indicators of healing, trust, and belonging.

This is the impact of Nanhe Kadam: creating a safe, nurturing space where children can experience joy, build confidence, discover the love of learning, and simply enjoy being children.

Books are a great way to enhance language skills and spark imagination as they help little ones learn new words, follow stories, and dream up their own worlds. Mrs Rachna Narwekar, our Director and Founder, shares three favourites we read with our Nanhe Kadam children: Gajapati Kulapati, Thakitta Tharakitta Bouncing Ball, and Follow the Ants.

Reading together also builds early literacy habits, strengthens attention and memory, and creates calm, connected moments that support emotional development. For children of incarcerated mothers living in prisons, stories offer comfort, stability and a vital sense of normalcy and connection during uncertain times.

If you’re reading to your little ones, try reading with expression, asking simple questions, and letting your child turn the pages to make storytime playful and interactive.

A day at the Nanhe Kadam Crèche begins with the children waking up beside their incarcerated mothers, to them spending their day in a safe and nurturing space.

From their favourite prayer, to creative activities, sensory play, story time, shared lunches, and much needed afternoon naps - every part of their day is filled with care, learning, laughter, and most importantly joy!

A joy-filled day with Club President Shalini Agarwal, Treasurer Shivani Kajaria, Secretary Kavita Sony, alongside our Founder & Director Mrs. Rachna Narwekar and Executive Director Amrita Mukherjee personally handing out kits.

More than essentials—these were quiet acts of love, reminding these little ones they’re seen, valued, and cared for. Every smile said it all! 💖

At Nanhe Kadam, we believe that care goes beyond the basics. During the monthly grooming session at Nanhe Kadam’s Pune Crèche, the children enjoyed a joyful and refreshing experience getting haircuts from our partners at the H2O Salon Pune, operated by Krishma Gala Rajput.

Regular grooming plays an important role in supporting a child’s dignity, self-esteem, and overall well-being, especially for children growing up in challenging circumstances. We are deeply grateful to H2O Salon Pune and their dedicated team for their continued compassion, time, and support in making this initiative possible every month.

A heartfelt note from the facilitators, Bhavesh Jadhav and Prakash Raute:
“It gives us immense joy to be able to assist these children whose parents are incarcerated—a situation that compels the children themselves to live within the confines of a jail. This is a small gesture of support aimed at helping these children look smart and beautiful, and we are delighted to be able to carry out this initiative every month by H2O Salon Pune.”

Together, small acts of care can create a lasting difference. Join us in continuing to support and uplift these children. DM us to make a contribution of your choice.

At Nanhe Kadam, we see the strength of mothers every day. For incarcerated mothers, motherhood does not pause at the prison gate and neither should care, connection, or dignity.

Through our Parent Pods, we create nurturing spaces where mothers can bond with their children, share moments of learning and affection, and stay emotionally connected during a time that can often feel isolating. These spaces are designed to support early childhood development while also strengthening the mother-child relationship with compassion and stability.

Because every mother deserves the chance to love, nurture, and be present, no matter her circumstances.

Happy Mother’s Day to the mothers who keep going, keep caring, and keep showing up with love.

In India, a traditional naming ceremony (Namkaran) is a sacred family ritual filled with blessings, songs, and loved ones, where a newborn receives their first name, marking identity and hope.

Yet for an incarcerated mother giving birth in prison, this joyful opportunity often fades: isolated from family, with no rituals to celebrate her child’s arrival.

At Nanhe Kadam, we’re bringing that joy back into their lives.

On April 22nd, our founder Mrs. Rachna Narwekar led a beautiful naming ceremony at Byculla, filling hearts with warmth and joy. The baby’s name was announced amid collective songs from the mothers, weaving unity and celebration in every note.

A tender highlight: the cradle adorned with fresh flowers and handmade touches, cradling the little one in dignity, protection, and love. The flowers came from a woman who used to sing lullabies during her incarceration last year. Now an entrepreneur, she returned to decorate the crib with blooms from her own small flower business.

Grateful for the presence of Superintendent, Jailor, visiting Judge, and our incredible team—Muskaan, Josephine, Jyoti, and Chitra. Moments like these remind us: every child deserves a fresh start.

📚 A new chapter begins at Byculla District Prison! 📚

On World Book Day, April 22, 2026, we inaugurated a vibrant library space, thanks to 101 generous books donated by the Gabula Foundation. Heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Ismat Abbasali Gabula, Ms. Naseem Shoaib Paradia, and Ms. Zeenat Sarafali Tinwala, who joined us with such warmth and enthusiasm.

Mothers, alongside our team, adorned the space with handmade paper flowers and garlands, transforming the area into a warm, colourful, and welcoming environment. The shelves of this library have been donated by . Superintendent Mr. Vikas Rajnalwar, a visiting Judge, and senior officials graced the event, applauding this step toward brighter futures.

We guided mothers on nurturing their children’s early development through the power of books, fostering imagination, bonding, and growth in the prison crèche.

One small library, endless possibilities for these little ones. ❤️
