Visit to Kumthe!
2016 began with a lot of excitement and learnings!
The entire team of Sahyogi’s with few education officers from Pune Municipal Corporation had a chance to visit the well-known Kumthe beat schools near Satara and meet the Extension Officer – Pratibha Bharade, who introduced ‘ज्ञानरचनावाद ‘ (Constructivism) in 40 schools.
We reached Satara by 10am where we met Pratibha ma’am. We were divided into four smaller groups and each group was allotted different school. The entire beat has different small villages placed at a distance of 2-3 kms. Every village has a Zilla Parishad primary school.
On reaching the school, we were greeted by school teachers and children. We sat in the classroom and observed the teacher giving various demonstrations. It was very interesting to see the students at their natural behavior. It was a perfect example of fear-free classroom where students had the liberty to play and learn in schools. All the material was made available to the students. Children would sit in groups and work. One most important take away from this visit was that there was no rote learning. Children would gain knowledge and learn through their experiences.
Post school visit we had a chance to interact with Pratibha Bharade. She answered all our questions and it was a delight to see her share her experiences. Pratibha Bharade has herself done a research on ‘contructivism’ before introducing it to her teachers.
On visiting the schools, we observed that all the teachers are convinced about this methodology. Few teachers shared that it took them 2 years of training before implementing this in their classrooms. Also all the teachers across 40 schools meet once in a month with Pratibha and share the challenges they face on the ground. There is a common sharing that takes place and every teacher is given the freedom to experiment. It was very inspiring to see the enthusiasm in the teachers and their work.
The energy at Kumathe was contagious and we all came back with huge motivation.

Sahyogi Marathi Typing Course

On December 21st, 22nd and 23rdSahyogis began with learning Marathi Typing at Rajiv Gnadhi E-Learning School.

This course was organized by QUEST as a pre-requisite to the Mathematics content -online course which will commence in January.

This was challenging to many of the Sahyogi;s who were not technically advanced yet they had the eagerness to learn. It was wonderful to see the excitement and energy in them to learn something new.

The instructor from QUEST introduced the Sahyogi’s with the basics of typing. With 3 days of continuous practice and constant feedback from instructor, most of the Sahgogi’s could achieve a speed of 8 – 10 words per minute with more than 85% accuracy.

Intervention-Led Educational Change Workshop

A group of 6 officers (5 Assistant Education Officers and Mrs. Chavan, Deputy Education Officer) from the Pune Municipal Corporation along with few members from Pune City Connect and SCERT participated in the Azim Premji University’s Intervention – Led Educational Change workshop . It was a mix of participants from different organisations working across the country. This brought in different perspectives to look at change. This workshop focused on how changecan occur in large public education systems.

During this workshop, we could relate to our Shikshak Sahyogi Dal project and had a lot of ideas on how could we make it more successful. Many ideas were generated during this workshop and it was a wonderful experience to see AEO’s investing into this project. We happen to read many case studies and interesting activities conducted across different states and countries in education.

As a team, we received many valuable inputs from the other participants as well as from the APU’s facilitators. This gave us a new perspective to look at our work.

We came out with a vast body of knowledge and a zest to do more!
