Sahara Aalhad

Sahara Aalhad Sahara, a peer-led organization, works towards building healthy behavior, confidence, and well-being in communities.

VISION –To empower most at-risk communities and reduce the vulnerability of people affected by HIV, TB, HEP C/B, and Substance Use. In Hindi, Sahara Aalhad means “Joyful Refuge”. Sahara Aalhad has many projects in Pune, all of which address issues related to substance use and HIV/AIDS. In 1998, actor Richard Gere visited Sahara Delhi,Kofi Anan,Padma Lakshmi, the NBA basketball team, Jay Sean and

Sai Paranjape to name just a few. Sahara Aalhad has implemented a range of strategies to empower people, strengthen communities, encourage safer behaviour and to aid in the reintegration of people into mainstream society. Sahara Aalhad runs services for men, women, children and the transgender community. Sahara Aalhad is PROUD to say that almost all of the staff members are former substance users and/or people living with HIV/AIDS, a testimony to the fact that, if given an opportunity, people educated or illiterate, have the capacity to perform as a MIRACLE WORKERS and produce quality work.

World TB Day | From Remembrance to Action

On this World TB Day, we do more than remember—we recommit.

We honour the legacy of Cedric Fernandes, Sahara’s Program Manager for Palliative Care, whose work restored dignity and compassion to those in their most vulnerable moments. We remember Dean Lewis, who led critical research under POFO–AVHI, strengthening evidence-based responses to TB and allied public health challenges.

Under the leadership of Dr. Deep Sahara, our commitment to quality, ethical, and patient-centred care continues to stand firm. The recognition of Michael’s Care Home, Delhi as the Best TB DOTS Centre for three consecutive years by LSR–DSACS is not just an achievement—it is proof that consistent, community-driven care saves lives.

But remembrance is not enough.

Tuberculosis remains a disease of inequality—impacting the most vulnerable, the underserved, and those often left behind by health systems. Ending TB requires more than treatment—it demands sustained political will, strengthened public health systems, community ownership, and dignity-driven care.

Today, we call on all stakeholders—government, civil society, healthcare providers, and communities—to unite, invest, and act decisively.

The fight against TB is not over. And neither is our commitment.

We admitted five boys under the age of 10 from a known substance-use hotspot into partner residential education facilities. Within days, all five ran away.

Before this, the children were travelling ticketless on trains in small groups, used for illicit substance runs, pulled into petty crime, and exposed to street violence.

This is not “bad behaviour.”

This is normal behavior when children grow up without safety, stability, and trust.

Their return to the streets is not a failure of discipline - it is a reminder that institutional placement alone is not enough.

Children who have survived trauma, exploitation, and neglect need gradual, community-based, trust-building support.

Sahara’s Bridge Education Hub & Day Care was created to meet children where they are.

To provide daily safety, nutrition, education support, counselling, and consistent adult care.
To build readiness before reintegration.
To include, not uproot.
To help marginalized children access education ...and thrive.

If we want lasting change, we must invest in community-rooted, child-centred models that understand the realities of children living on the margins.

No child should feel safer on the street than in a school.

Healthy children begin with healthy households.

At Sahara, our work is rooted in strengthening families so children can grow, learn, and thrive with dignity.

Through the Lucky Iron Shakti Leaf distribution initiative, we are supporting 348 families living below the poverty line with a simple, affordable, and sustainable solution to improve iron intake.

This intervention is already reaching 464 children and adolescents and benefiting 890 family members across underserved urban and peri-urban communities.

When nutrition is addressed at the household level, the impact on child health, development, and well-being is profound.

Assessing risk in marginalized communities living below the poverty line is not optional it is essential to any meaningful, impact-driven intervention.
You cannot expect adherence, recovery, or positive outcomes when basic survival needs are unmet.

If a family has no access to even one nutritious meal a day, yet is placed on strong, long-term medications, the outcome is predictable: poor compliance, deteriorating health, and the emergence of drug-resistant strains.

This is not individual failure ... it is systemic neglect.

Health interventions must be designed with dignity, nutrition, and lived realities at the center. Anything less puts lives at risk and undermines the very goals of public health.
