BioProm is a bio-fertilizer made from a blend of beneficial microorganisms that naturally improve soil health and plant growth.

It is prepared using organic base materials such as cow dung, crop residues, jaggery, and water, which are fermented together to multiply useful microbes. These microbes help in breaking down organic matter, fixing nutrients in the soil, and making them more accessible to plants reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.

BioProm is applied to the soil or around the root zone of crops. It enhances soil fertility, improves moisture retention, and supports stronger root development, leading to better crop yield and quality.

Beyond its agricultural benefits, BioProm offers a practical opportunity for farmers and rural entrepreneurs to build a small-scale business. Since it can be produced with low investment and locally available materials, individuals or Self-Help Groups can manufacture and sell it within their communities. With increasing awareness and demand for organic and natural farming inputs, BioProm can become a steady source of additional income while promoting eco-friendly practices.

Lupin Human Welfare & Research Foundation in collaboration with GIZ India and MAVIM under the Soil Protection & Rehabilitation for Food Security Project, is supporting the adoption of BioProm through women-led Self-Help Groups across Maharashtra enabling farmers to improve soil health, protect beneficial organisms, and transition towards more sustainable agricultural practices.

Biochar is a carbon-rich form of charcoal produced by heating organic waste such as wood chips, manure, or agricultural residue in a low-oxygen environment.

Nowadays Biochar is also emerging as a rural business opportunity within natural farming systems. Beyond its role as a soil conditioner, it offers farmers a practical way to generate additional income by producing and selling it to nurseries, NGOs and fellow farmers. With increasing demand for climate-smart and sustainable agricultural inputs, biochar is becoming a locally scalable solution that supports both environmental restoration and rural entrepreneurship.

Under the Soil Protection & Rehabilitation for Food Security Project, Lupin Human Welfare & Research Foundation (LHWRF), in collaboration with GIZ India and MAVIM, is promoting natural farming practices across Maharashtra through women-led Self-Help Groups. The initiative focuses on improving soil health, strengthening sustainable agriculture, and building community capacity.

Watch the full video to explore how biochar can become both a sustainable farming input and a income-generating business.

โ€œOn my 4.9 acres of land, I tried something new this year,โ€ shares Nandulal Sahebrao Wagh. โ€œFor the first time, I planted drumsticks on 2 acres, alongside cotton and bajra on the rest. After all these years, I can hardly believe I changed my cropping pattern.โ€

In Sadgaon , meetings on the ground are transforming the way communities think about water conversation and farming techniques. What once depended on uncertainty is now guided by collective understanding and shared responsibility. Villagers are coming together to reflect on their available resources, plan their usage, and make informed decisions that support both their land and their livelihoods.

A major turning point came with the revival of a long-neglected check dam by Lupin Human Welfare & Research Foundation (LHWRF), along with improved rainfall over the season. With nearly 700 cubic meters of water now stored, the impact is visible across fields that once struggled with scarcity. Farmers like Shantaram Keshav Patil and Nandulal Sahebrao Wagh are not only witnessing better water availability but with consistent on-ground support and regular training from LHWRF, they are also steadily adopting improved farming practices. By introducing less water-intensive crops like drumsticks alongside cotton and bajra, they are adapting to changing conditions while improving their yields

These collective efforts are gradually building stronger, more secure livelihoods and a more hopeful future for the village.

In a step towards building resilient rural livelihoods, Lupin Human Welfare & Research Foundation in partnership with NABARD - National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development supported 10 Wadi farmers in Nalchha Block, Dhar, with 10 units of five female goats each under its Tribal Development Project, which is currently working with 400 farmers in the region.

Under the project, such efforts are part of a larger integrated approach where Wadi development is complemented by livestock support, vegetable cultivation, and improved access to water resources through irrigation systems and farm inputs. It includes key interventions such as horticulture plantation, goat-based livelihoods, intercropping, and initiatives focused on health, nutrition, and womenโ€™s empowerment.

The programme is designed to strengthen both productivity and resilience, emphasizing continuous training, exposure visits, and technical guidance, enabling farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices and diversify their income sources.

Together, these efforts are creating a holistic development framework that reduces distress migration, builds community ownership, and ensures long-term sustainability of tribal livelihoods.

โ€œEarlier, I had nothing much to share,โ€ Khilan Singh recalls. Life on his 8-bigha farm in Vidisha , was once defined by daily struggles and uncertainty about what lay ahead. Over time, steady efforts began to show results - Improved yields and diversified income slowly changed the course of his days.

With support from the Lupin Human Welfare & Research Foundation, in partnership with NABARD - National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Khilan began exploring dairy as a dependable source of income alongside farming. Starting with one buffalo, he soon expanded by purchasing a second buffalo, doubling his milk production, and later added a cow to further diversify. With improved agricultural inputs and mechanization, his crop yields also increased soybean harvests reached 12โ€“13 quintals, peanuts generated around Rs 40,000 annually. This integrated approach of crops and livestock helped him build an annual income of over Rs 2 lakh, allowing him to reinvest confidently into his farm and assets.

The day he brought home a tractor, along with the quiet pride of gifting his wife a saree in recognition of her constant support, turned into moments he holds close. Today, those conversations are different Khilan is the one others turn to for advice on farming and dairy.

Jayashree Kishor Patil, a 46-year-old farmer from Dhamnar village in Dhule , has shown great strength and determination. After her husband passed away she took responsibility for her family and their farm.

With support from Lupin Human Welfare & Research Foundation and Better Cotton Initiative, Jayashree attended community training sessions and started improving her farming methods. She reduced the use of chemical fertilizers by making organic alternatives at home. This helped improve soil health and also lowered her farming costs. She also adopted better practices like single-seed planting, using sticky traps to control pests, and taking better care of her crops.

As her crop yields improved and costs reduced, she decided to try something new. LHWRF also supported her with drip irrigation and good-quality saplings. She started growing fruit crops on one acre of land, planting 30 mango and 20 guava trees. She is now expecting good yields from these saplings.

Jayashreeโ€™s journey shows that sustainable farming can improve not just the land, but also a farmerโ€™s confidence and income.

Shri Vedu Uttam Khandekar, a farmer from Balsane village of Dhule district established a shadenet nursery in March 2025 withsupport from the Lupin Human Welfare & Research Foundation ABLE Program.

Starting with chilli, brinjal, cabbage and tomato, he produced and sold over 1,00,000 saplings, earning โ‚น1.10 lakhs in a single season. Encouraged by this success, he expanded further, raising 70,000 papaya seedlings and 3,000 marigold saplings, gradually moving beyond vegetable crops to include horticulture and floriculture.

Beyond income, his nursery has brought access closer to home. As the only nursery in the area, it has reduced farmersโ€™ dependence on distant markets. Earlier, farmers had to travel long distances to purchase saplings, but now quality plants are easily available within the community.

Today, his nursery has emerged as a model of rural entrepreneurship, inspiring others in the community.
