(SCI)

What is SCI? Our accomplishments? Decision is yours.

SCI is a non-commercial organization established in the year 2006 for the cause of climbing safety and awareness. What are our aims?
• Rebolting of climbing routes
• Spreading awareness regarding climbing safety
• Bolting of difficult trekking routes

How SCI works?
• SCI selects a climbing route as a project which was previously bolted. We only do rebolting and do not make any new clim

bing routes.
• We invite various organizations working in the field of trekking and mountaineering to sponsor the project.
• These organizations bear all the expenses related to transport, accommodation, food and media coverage. As participation is more important than mere sponsorship, sponsors need to work together with SCI at project site. With project completion, sponsors acquire the credit and right for media publicity.
• SCI shoulders responsibility for the expenses of technical gear and bolts required in the project.
• Working on site helps to spread awareness regarding climbing safety.
• SCI does not conduct any kind of climbing activities or expedition during, after or in between rebolting projects.
• Climbing is strictly done for rebolting of routes. Who are the members of SCI?
• Any person could be a member of SCI as it’s not a commercial organization and members are not bound to its activities.
• Members come together for a project and contribute their share in any form. After completion of project they can enjoy their activities with their respective clubs or organization. Why MGB Bolts?
• Sahyadri is made up of Besalt rock which is very porous and multilayered.
• This feature makes it weak for holding any bolt placed superficially.
• Previously used bolts were drilled only 2cms into the rock and there were no arrangements to ascertain its perfect placement.
• The new MGB bolt is 16 mm wide and 9cm\ 18 cm long which drills through multiple layers of the rock.
• It is prepared from a V2A steel available in India at reasonable cost.
• Also these bolts are manufactured by SCI itself, which make its cost considerably lower than similar options available in market.
• Welding with metal spots on both sides of the bolt helps to hold it well. This increases its vertical pulling strength which is more than 3000kg.
• Bolt is placed inside the hole of identical length and diameter with a chemical tube. The chemical tube breaks and forms a very hard mixture needed to hold the bolt for all the life.
• All this process takes mere 10 minutes for fixing. Year 2007

Why should we join SCI? Adventure is an emerging sport in recent times. Rappelling, rock-climbing, valley crossing activities are emerging as a ‘high’ in youngsters. While these activities bring a considerable risk to an individual, bolts become the most important protecting factor in terms of safety. Should we give our future generations a more safe and standard sport environment? Or will we let them hang their lives on unsafe bolts? Finally, ‘Our safety is our responsibility.’
