110th Birth Anniversary | 16 September 2026

Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Pune, pays its heartfelt tribute to Smt. M. S. Subbulakshmi, one of India's most celebrated and revered vocalists.

Born on 16 September 1916, she became an iconic voice of Carnatic music, captivating audiences across India and the world with her extraordinary artistry, devotion and musical expression.

From the concert stage to the world of cinema, her music carried the depth and beauty of Indian tradition to millions. Her performances of devotional compositions continue to touch hearts across generations.

She was honoured with some of India's highest recognitions, including the Bharat Ratna, *
Ramon Magsaysay Award, and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

🙏 On her 110th Birth Anniversary, we remember and honour a legendary musician whose voice became an enduring symbol of the richness of Indian music.

🎶 Pt. Sawai Gandharva Smruti Din 🎶

On 12 September, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Pune, remembers and pays tribute to Pt. Sawai Gandharva, one of the distinguished vocalists of Hindustani Classical Music.

Born Ramchandra Kundgolkar Saunshi, Pt. Sawai Gandharva was a disciple of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and an important exponent of the Kirana Gharana.

His rich musical legacy continues through generations of musicians he inspired and taught, including Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Pandit Firoz Dastur, Dr. Gangubai Hangal and Smt. Hirabai Barodekar.

His contribution to Hindustani classical music remains an enduring part of India's rich musical heritage.

🙏 On Sawai Gandharva Smruti Din, we offer our humble tribute to this great maestro and remember his invaluable contribution to Indian music.

🎶 When the Sitar Began to Sing… 🎶

Remembering Ustad Vilayat Khan
28 August | Birth Anniversary🌿

What if the strings of a sitar could breathe like a human voice?

Ustad Vilayat Khan turned that possibility into a musical reality.

A towering figure of the Imdadkhani–Etawah Gharana, Vilayat Khan Saheb brought an extraordinary vocal quality to the sitar through his mastery of Gayaki Ang— allowing the instrument to express the delicate nuances, bends, slides and emotional depth of Hindustani vocal music.

His sitar was not merely an instrument in his hands.

It could sing, sigh, pause and speak.

With his deeply personal approach to sur, meend and raga expression, he expanded the expressive possibilities of the sitar and created a musical language that became his unmistakable signature.

Born into a distinguished musical lineage, he began his rigorous training at a very young age. His first recording came when he was still a child, and over the decades that followed, his artistry established him as one of the most influential sitar maestros of the 20th century.

He also composed music for films including Jalsaghar, The Guru and Kadambari, bringing the beauty of his musical imagination to audiences beyond the classical concert stage.

But his greatest achievement was perhaps this:

He made the sitar speak the language of the human heart.

On his birth anniversary,
Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Pune, remembers Ustad Vilayat Khan — a maestro whose pursuit of musical perfection continues to inspire generations of sadhaks and listeners.
