As part of the PARMM initiative, the PAPP team engaged with students of Chhatrapati Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Primary School, Mundhwa, through a focused awareness activity.

The session began with a river walk, where students observed the current state of the river and reflected on its condition. Through a rally with banners, songs, and slogans, they voiced the need for protecting the Mulaโ€“M***a River.

Interactive activities and a presentation introduced key concepts of water conservation, waste segregation, sanitation, and the impacts of improper waste disposal. A street play further reinforced the importance of cleanliness and responsible behaviour.

The activity saw active participation from students and teachers, encouraging young citizens to take small but meaningful steps toward river conservation.

With rainwater harvesting facilities in schools, children are using reused water to grow plants. This simple practice results in giving back to the nature while nurturing a new life.

On Earth Day, we strengthen our commitment to ensure thoughtful use of Earthโ€™s resources, building and sustaining healthy ecosystems within schools.

It started with a livelihood. But it didnโ€™t stay there.

For Priyanka, earning a livelihood became a way to empower herselfโ€”and that one decision began shaping choices beyond her home.

Because when women start carving their own paths,
they also begin to influence how communities grow, adapt, and sustain.

As part of the PARMM initiative, the PAPP team conducted an open conversation with residents at an SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority) housing society in Puneโ€™s Peth area.

During surveys, the team observed a persistent issue- waste was being dumped directly in common areas, leading to piles of unsegregated waste lying in open spaces for days. Although Pune Municipal Corporationโ€™s collection facility was available, due to the absence of shared responsibility, waste was neither collected at source nor handed over systematically. This compromised hygiene but also created breeding grounds for flies, mosquitoes, and rodents, increasing risks to public health.

To address this, the PAPP team carried out door-to-door awareness and conducted a session on the Aโ€“Z of household waste management, focusing on segregation, safe handling, and how responsible disposal reduces environmental and health risks.

Residents raised an important concern: Will everyone participate? What if some donโ€™t- will the area remain clean?

Through dialogue and collective agreement, residents stepped forward to organize a waste collection drive. A PMC vehicle was arranged for disposal with the support of the sanitation inspector, marking a shared step toward cleaner and healthier surroundings.

Under the PARMM (Pollution Abatement of River Mulaโ€“M***a) project, we are glad to collaborate with Sagarmitra Organisation to strengthen efforts towards cleaner and healthier rivers

Mr. Vinod Bodhankar joined us through this collaboration with sagarmitra Organisation, engaging with students around the growing challenge of plastic pollution and how student-led initiatives can drive meaningful change at the school level.

In two schools, plastic collection corners have now been set up where students can responsibly dispose of used plastic. Many have also begun bringing plastic waste from their homes to the school collection centres, extending the effort beyond campus

As more students participate, the initiative is quietly nurturing a sense of ownership and leadership- showing how change grows when young people, schools, and organisations come together.

Partnerships like these reflect how NGOs and communities are stepping forward to support PARMM and safeguard river health

Last week, the ESF team, working on the PARMM (Pollution Abatement of River Mulaโ€“M***a) initiative, met with the womenโ€™s group at Lighthouse Katraj under the Public Awareness & Public Participation (PAPP) component.

In most households, women manage everyday resources by deciding what comes in, how it is used, and how it is finally discarded. Taking this into consideration, the ESF team has been conducting focused group discussions with women to understand their practices and to engage them meaningfully in conversations around waste and river health.
The session traced household waste beyond the home to show how daily practices contribute to river pollution and why informed choices matter for river restoration under PARMM.

It also reinforced the role of households as the first and most important link in protecting urban river systems

During routine community interactions under the PARMM (Pollution Abatement of River Mulaโ€“M***a) initiative, the ESF team identified a recurring issue across several settlements- poorly maintained Community Toilet Blocks (CTBs) that are heavily relied upon by households for daily sanitation.

Many of these CTBs had become difficult to use due to blocked drains, poor cleanliness, and delayed maintenance. This directly affected public hygiene and also contributed to the wastewater entering urban drains and nearby water bodies.

While these issues were widely experienced, they were often not formally reported, limiting timely municipal response.

To improve this, the ESF team supported residents in using the Swachhata App and PMC Care App, enabling them to raise sanitation-related grievances in a structured way.

Across multiple neighbourhoods, citizens submitted complaints related the recurring issues affecting the CTBs, resulting in prompt response from the PMC sanitation teams.

Beyond physical improvements, this process has also strengthened the citizen engagement with municipal systems, helping communities move from passive reporting to active monitoring and follow-up.

Under the PARMM (Pollution Abatement of River Mula M***a) initiative,

ESF has conducted awareness rallies across the city, with students from 50+ schools, high schools, and colleges stepping forward to engage citizens and neighbourhoods.

Through street plays, open dialogues, and door-to-door outreach, communities reflected on everyday waste practices and their impact on the Mulaโ€“M***a River.

As voices grew louder, more residents joined in turning awareness into shared responsibility.

This is how change begins.

With people. With participation. With purpose. ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒฑ

During day-to-day community interactions under the PARMM (Pollution Abatement of River Mula M***a) initiative, the ESF team repeatedly observed pollution in many forms- chronic garbage spots, waste littered in naturally flowing streams, and neglected public toilets.

These issues are widespread and cut across communities. Yet, when it comes to cleaning and corrective action, responsibility is often shared by all, but owned by none.

To address this challenge, the team conceptualised a focused effort to ensure that the Swachhata App (MoHUA) and PMC Care App (Pune Municipal Corporation) reach every citizen. These digital platforms play a vital role in enabling structured, citizen-led participation in urban sanitation governance.

The apps address around 10 categories of civic and sanitation-related grievances that directly impact public health and river systems. Key grievance types include:
โ€ข Sewage leakage and overflowing manholes, causing direct contamination of water bodies
โ€ข Clogged stormwater drains and nallah blockages due to waste and silt accumulation
โ€ข Open discharge of untreated wastewater into natural channels
By creating a direct and transparent link between citizens and PMC officials, these platforms ensure quicker action and stronger accountability. Thousands of Pune citizens are already using these apps, taking responsibility and contributing to cleaner rivers and a healthier city.
