As children, every little detail of Ma Durga’s murti fascinated us.

We waited with bated breath as the hours passed and, one by one, she came alive before our eyes. First, her jewelry. Then her weapons. Every detail seemed to bring her a little closer to us.

And then, just moments before the puja officially began, came the most sacred moment of all.

Chokhu Daan.

With utmost devotion and reverence, her eyes were painted, the final detail to be added to the murti. Eyes that seemed to hold the love, strength, and kindness of the whole world.

And when Ma finally looked upon us with those determined, merciful, and beautiful eyes, somehow, the world seemed alright again.

But have you ever wondered why the eyes are the very last thing to be painted?

Why is Chokhu Daan - not simply another ritual, but the moment that marks the beginning of Durga Puja?

Perhaps because until Ma’s eyes open, she is still a murti.

And when her eyes are painted, we don’t just see her - we know that she sees us.
