The felicitation event of our newly elected DGND. S. RAVI, was organised at the Ball Room of the Iconic Taj Coromandel Hotel in Chennai.

It was a very well attended event with over 155 from the Rotary club of Madras and over 200 from other clubs in District 3234, including many District officials.

Dear Rotarians,

Heartiest congratulations to our Rtn. PP. S. RAVI, on his election as our club’s 20th District Governor for the Rotary year 2028–29. This is a proud and fitting recognition of his leadership, and we at Rotary Club of Madras celebrate this milestone with him.

Throughout his years with us, he has shown a rare and inspiring passion in everything he took on—whether in Rotary service or other endeavours. That passion, combined with exceptional people-management skills and a warm, friendly demeanour, has earned him the respect and affection of colleagues and friends alike. Time and again he has aimed high, proved doubters wrong, and successfully completed ambitious goals—qualities that will serve the district and our club extraordinarily well.

That his governorship coincides with the Centennial of RC Madras makes this moment even more special. It is indeed in the fitness of things to have a Governor from our own club during our Centennial Year—an advantage that will augur well for seamless planning and for involving all the Southern districts in the South of India in our celebrations and programmes.

As a club, we extend our warmest wishes for a successful, fulfilling, and impactful year as District Governor. We stand ready to support him in every way as he leads us through that historic year.

Finally, history is repeating itself, for after 38 years, we will have two of our members, don the mantle of District Governor, consecutively in the Rotary years 2027-28 and 2028-29.

The last time this happened were in the years 1988-89 and 1989-90.

With best wishes,
N.K.Gopinath
Past President
Rotary club of Madras.

*Dear Rotarians,*
Our *RCM RYLA* to and in Malaysia with 139 participants across two vibrant batches was truly memorable.

The second batch, dedicated to Vidya Mandir School Interact club, which is our oldest Interact club, who have completed 60 years of existence. For the first time, we created our lyrics and music using *AI*—an idea inspired by our brilliant youngsters. We also had the privilege of meeting two Interact Clubs and three Rotary Clubs, including the historic *Rotary Club of Klang,* chartered in 1930, who graciously hosted us for an evening.

Regards,
*Rtn. Suman Voora.*

On Saturday last, August 8, we had the legendary fast bowler from Australia, Glen McGrath address our meeting.

It was a wonderfully organized meeting where our Rtn. Bharat Shetty was the moderator and the one who interviewed Glen.

The video clips in between the tete e tete was very crisp and spot on, that added flavor to what was already a very interesting.

The bowling great, spoke about his journey from a small village in NSW, to and through his cricketing career that spanned 14 years to his current passion of helping cancer patients, farming, cooking and finally having been qualified aa a helicopter pilot.

Kudos to our President Nikhil Raj , Rtn. Rajesh Mani our Club Service Director and Rtn. Mohit Bajaj our programmes committee Chair, for pulling off this wonderful event.

It would be apt to remember that we have had the great Steve Waugh, the former Australian captain and Darren Lehman address our club too, in the past.

Here are a few pics of that meeting below.

At our 97th Charter Day celebrations on July 19, amongst other things we unveiled our Centennial Logo, at the hands of our District Governor Rtn.Vinod Saraogi, that we will use until our Centennial in the Rotary year 2028-29.

The Centennial Celebrations Committee has been in place for about a year now and are brainstorming on how we would take not only the celebrations, but what different projects we will begin, to culminate in the Centennary year.

The PR wing of the Committee cane out with the Logo as you all can see below and that was accepted but the Committee and presented to the club on our Charter Nite celebrations.

Our President Rtn. Nikhil Raj, presided over the event.

Thr Rotary Club of Madras(RCM), will be the first Rotary club in the whole of South India and thus it will be a Centennial for Rotary as a whole in Southern India.

We plan to involve all the 19 Districts in the South during that year and have started connecting with them, one at a time.

We in RCM are excited at the upcoming Centennary in less than 3 years from now.

We will keep you all posted of developments from time to time.

Ijeoma

Ijeoma Pearl Okoro from Nigeria is the RI President’s representative to our District Conference 2025 and a Trustee of the Rotary Foundation. She is also an old friend of the Rotary Club of Madras and one of the most affable and dynamic Rotary leaders I know.

Just before I took over as President of RCM , we test marketed the Rotary End Polio Flame at the Sydney Convention in June 2014. Our grand plan was to have the Flame travel around the world to fight the last mile against the war against polio and make a ceremonial entry into the Sao Paulo, Brazil Convention in 2015.

The reception to the Flame in Sydney was incredible. We knew we had a winner!

A graceful benefactor then appeared on the scene: Ijeoma. She connected us to a Nigerian billionaire, Sir Emeka Offor who invited us to dinner at a lovely waterfront hotel in Sydney. Rajesh Somasundaram, Harikrishna and I were present along with our spouses and Ijeoma. (Gopi, who chaired the Flame project did not come to Sydney). Sir Emeka expressed his interest in donating a huge sum to the Rotary Foundation in the name of the Flame. Alas, some copyright issues made that difficult. The Flame nevertheless went on to become a runaway success and one of the largest global projects of any club in Rotary's history.

Ijeoma continued to help us. Nigeria, which was then endemic and where Ijeoma was a prime mover in the National PolioPlus Committee loved the Flame (see pictures). The country soon became polio free.

With leaders like Ijeoma, Rotary’s future is in good hands. She is amongst the best and brightest that we have.
