Sanjeevan is a special initiative by Sri Aurobindo Society in Puducherry, India, in collaboration with the Institute of Palliative Medicine (IPM) and HelpAge India. This initiative aims to practice a comprehensive, community-based approach to chronic diseases and end-of-life care based on a spiritual foundation. By taking care of their physical, emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual needs, Sanjeevan is patient-centered, not disease-focused.

Meet Ms. Valarmathi — a polio warrior, dedicated volunteer, and inspiring teacher who, wearing her cervical collar with quiet courage, sat alongside fellow volunteers and the spirited women of Embalam–Pudhukuppam village for 10 incredible days. Together, they learned, created, and brought to life these stunning handcrafted wire bags — every single one planned, organised, and executed entirely by themselves. 🌈👜

When treatment ends, care continues. ❤️

For over 13 years, Sanjeevan, the palliative care initiative of the Sri Aurobindo Society, has been providing compassionate, home-based care to the elderly, chronically bedridden, and terminally ill across 118 villages and hamlets in Puducherry and adjoining Tamil Nadu.

Built on the belief that every individual deserves dignity, comfort and compassionate support, Sanjeevan goes beyond medicine—addressing the physical, emotional, psychological, social and spiritual needs of patients and their families. Through dedicated volunteers, trained caregivers and community participation, the initiative continues to transform lives, proving that care is as important as cure.

❤️ Every Home Visit Brings Comfort, Care and Compassion

For many living with life-limiting illnesses, home is the most comforting place to receive care. Through regular home visits, the dedicated students from various nursing colleges volunteering for Sanjeevan, the palliative care wing of Sri Aurobindo Society, offer compassionate support, medical guidance, emotional reassurance, and a listening ear to patients and their families.

With every visit, they bring dignity, hope, and the reminder that no one has to face illness alone.

Glimpses of the workshop and volunteer felicitation programme held on 22 February 2023 at Puduvai Tamizh Sangam, Puducherry. Three resource persons from Kerala and Tamil Nadu and 62 community workers were felicitated. The Director of Sanjeevan, Dr Suresh, appreciated all the active community volunteers for giving their time in taking care of the palliative patients.
