India is witnessing an intense heatwave, with 19 of the world’s 20 hottest recorded cities located in the country at one point in time, while Lumbini was the only one outside. This does not mean India is the hottest place on Earth overall, but rather that these are the hottest measured urban locations at that moment. Cities like Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Motihari, Munger and Siwan are seeing extreme temperatures between 43°C and 44°C, placing Bihar firmly in the global heat spotlight.
The surge is driven by strong solar radiation, clear skies, hot dry winds and broader climate patterns reducing natural cooling. The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions may intensify between April 22 and 24, with little relief expected until pre monsoon activity begins. This pattern highlights a growing climate concern, as extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and are already affecting millions across the country.
